A lot of big sites aren't valid:

ebay - 195 errors
amazon - 1310 errors 139 warnings
sky sports - 211 errors 47 warnings
yahoo - 153 errors 21 warnings

And these are websites that have massive web development teams in the company

I don't know anything about w3 compliance stuff, my anti fraud site seems to have a few errors :

Result: 60 Errors, 218 warning(s)

i wouldn't worry about it,it seems every time you add content it makes a site non-complient,i run most my sites through w3c before i add content and then when i add my bumph it knocks it out again...

Providing your css is solid you shouldn't have any problems unless you start using wysiwyg editors and adding tables etc...
