I have been dabbling in domains for a while now

a few of my clients are looking for me to manage some of their names for them.

so was thinking about getting my own TAG

what are the pluses to getting one and the negatives

thanks in advance

wilco

tag's ok and makes things easier with some things but you'll need to use a registra to renew your names then transfeer them back to your tag unless you get your own membership.

It's about £500 from memory but means you get domains at £5 +vat, that's when it's worth it.

It's worth getting your own TAG + membership if you are holding a lot of names, the savings on renewals or new regges pays for itself, plus you have complete control over your names. I've had my own TAG for a while now JAMESM
I became a registrar at the time I was holding lots of names, I have since downsized to less than 100 uk domains, quality is better than quantity, I don't have either :)

How does it work if you're needing to register domains in the name of several different companies? Can you have 1 Nominet account configured with multiple sets of "Whois" data? And how would billing work?

Yep, when you register a domain name in your domain manager that is on noms sit. When regging a name it lets you select an existing Nom account or create a new customer account. So basically you don't have to type in all the whois details again if that customers account already has names on your tag.

you can also use off the shelf software if you want to manage many clients, and let them manage their own names.. I've used AWBS for years, had it installed on www.nomz.co.uk for a while, but been under construction ever since :)
AWBS is cheap and cheerful, think it's less than $200, but does the job.

Yep Fagend is kind of right, they want to know much more about your business practices before they ok it than they used to.

However I just filled in the form with" My tag is not for public use, it will be only used for my own name administration"

As most of the questions ask about disclaimers and how customers can get renewals and transfer out etc, which wasn't needed in my case.
