One of the many reasons I love dogs

That's what I love about dogs, they're so unselfish. You would have hoped that the dad would have jumped in to rescue her...I really hope the comment that she would have died if not for the dog was for sensational journalism and not because her parents don't care about her.

lovely story, shame the dog will only be around for a few months longer, how do you replace a dog like that? you cant.

A fabulous story. Wonderful dog. Dogs are wonderful - not much more to say really.

Great story - I've been brought up around dogs all my life, there what makes a family.

Dogs are the most unselfish, loyal and loving animals there is - us humans could learn a lot from them. :)

I've had dogs all my life too - my last girl was almost 16 years old when she died last July, I was heartbroken, you think they go on forever.

Back in dog land again though from early this year with a mad, ten month old Patterdale with a Twitter page with 669 followers, mad isn't it! BOL! (Bark Out Loud!). :D

Just come in from lunch with a shoe full of dog mess, dogs are a bad subject for me at the moment.

For the most part I prefer dogs to people as the only hidden agenda they have is "food", well at least my two chocolate labradors do!

Dogs never cease to amaze with what they are capable of for their master.

I recently had to put our dog down, he was very sick, brain tumor, he would be fine one minute and then crazy the next.

I sent my wife to her mums for the weekend and arranged everything, got a tablet to knock him out as he hated the vets and i wanted everything to be calm. The plan was to give him the tablet, carry him to the vets, in and out, no stress or worry, they would have him cremated and bring the urn round.

Needless to say the tablet did not work, he had a bad fit and went mad. All i wanted was a peaceful goodbye and he attacked and tried to kill anything that got in his way, including me and at the vets. He was so scared and for 30 minutes he was like a rabid dog.

Any way the vet finally gave him the first calming injection, he calmed down and i held him in my arms. The vet then pushed the second needle into his collar and at that moment he opened his eyes, licked the side of my face and died peacefully in his sleep.

It took the vet 10 minutes to get me out, i cried like a baby and refused to let them take him away. He advised me not to drive. So i sat in my car and cried for half an hour. Got some very weird looks from the locals;-)

I got home and called the wife, i lied to her. Told her it was wonderful and peaceful, i told her that i carried him to the vets almost unconscious.

I have had a few dogs in my time but have to say i never thought it would have that effect on me. I even called my mum and cried down the phone.

I want another but not sure i will for a few years... the wife actually puts him in the garden when the suns out. Every time i hear her tell the story of how peaceful he died i get a lump in my throat.

Best dog i ever had.

^ Wonderful story Whibs. I've been there as well. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful but so sad, my dogs are everything to me,bought back memories, i have 2 labradors now, but sadly lost one a few years back, absolutely heartbreaking.

I have just written an article in my blog about it actually.

On the bright side, I just love watching the police/customs dogs at work. Just watched an episode of 'Dog Squad' and saw a young lab pup grab a drug smuggler with a minute amount of hash stuffed in his crack. Working dogs like this, and of course disability dogs are just so precious.

What a remarkable story. We've always had pets dogs. They really are part of the family.

The Dog has such wonderful instincts, and I believe you can pretty much train it to do just about anything: cook your dinner, file your taxes, drive your kids to school, you name it.

Man's/woman's/kid's best friend indeed...
