Update: all now resolved. One young naive charity are absolutely delighted their web development plans and costs to date have not been wasted. Benefit to me - further enhanced my reputation in my niche which hopefully will return me good financial karma in the long run.

Charity is selfless
If they were genuinely using the domain to help and losing it would set them back + it wasn't that great of a domain, id be inclined to hand it back
If it was a x,xxx domain and they hadn't used it for anything yet.. well, that's different

If this was a company that let it drop I would have asked for money. A lot of it.
You'll find far to often sob stories and get taken advantage of in business. If the domain was that important to the company why did they let it drop?

Well HMRC view them differently, and so do I. Sadly, some larger organisations abuse the system and pretend to be charites to obtain concessions.
