There are a ton of other reasons why SEO will live on, the good SEOs will always be in demand after this update, the bad ones will be scratching their heads.

Content Marketing
Sensible link building measures
Social Media
On-site SEO

Google's dominance of search such that a huge percentage of what SEO's do is little more than

• Observing what Google is up to
• Understanding this
• Developing strategies to take advantage of this
• Implementing those strategies.

The more Google mucks about with how it does search, the more precious this knowledge becomes.

Ironically, Google trying to negate the effects of SEO is just making the better part of the SEO industry potentially more valuable.

And it will only be the big brands that can really afford or understand the value of top end SEO.
