Can anyone from Nominet let me know what I'm meant to do with all these domain registration letters you send me?

No one ever asks to see them or the digital certificates - can you let me know of any legal implications of not retaining them or not completing the online registration?

in the age of global warming, recycling and general green issues I am concerned in the amount of paper required for a mainly digital transaction and the fact that I doubt its even recycled paper - does nominet support any green charities or use renewable sources for its paper consumption?

thanks

PS: if other 'domainers' also have this concern could they please respond and voice their opinion ;)

If you put them in the green wheelie bin, are you not recycling?

no nominet response? - so what is the legalities of not doing the online registration or keeping the certificates - are my domains at risk?

Nothing is clear

When it comes to domain ownership nothing is clear.........I dont have time to complete the online form.....they pile up on my desk

IMO "Registrants Online" is set up so Registrants can easily update their contact information. As Nominet states in the FAQs "...It is vital that you keep your contact details up to date..." - and it is part of the T&Cs that contact information is correct.

It is also so the Registrant can check that their information is correct when the name is first registered or renewed. You'd be surprised how many registrants never think (or don't know about) using a WhoIs, and it is a good way of encouraging them, I should imagine, to be aware of the importance of the registration details, and at the same time starts to build a Registrant-Nominet awareness.

That's exactly right. Registrant's Online was set up to allow registrants to go online and check their whois details and amend them if they move house or change telephone number or email address.

does this mean that if my contact/whois information is correct then i can delay (until i have time) to complete the online registration process or is this not necessary for 'power users' ;) . If I dont complete for any reason am i breaking any of the T&Cs and therefore liable for punishment?

what about all this paper - any chance pro users can opt out of recieving paper documentation and save the enviroment :D ?

So far as I know logging onto Registrants Online doesn't "complete" the registration process, and there is no T&C (I believe) saying you *must* - it's just to check the details are correct and giving you the facility to make changes when/if necessary. You can ask your ISP to make the changes for you instead, anyway.

The Confirmation of Registration does state that if the details are not correct and up to date "...you may lose the domain name..."

That's exactly right again. :)

So every year Nominet send me a couple of reams of paper, plus the envelopes and pay the postage. I have to go to all the bother of shreading it.

There should be an opt-out. I wouldn't even ask for a discount.

When computers first found their way into businesses we thought we'd invented the paperless society :p Then we discovered it was so easy to print out reports and spreadsheets and projections and whatifs, we'd in fact started to generate *more* paper trails than ever (especially when people started to put the printouts into filing cabinets !!!

The first thing many people do when they get an email is to print it out. And I'm forever being asked by Registrants why they don't get a Domain Certificate (to hang on their office wall?) - and have to direct them to Registrants Online so they can generate and print one for themselves.

Like you, FC, I'd be happy for it all to be done electronically - (so long as the security was still in place).

One day in the distant future, archaeologists are going to dig up the Nominet offices and wonder what all the computers were doing in a paper mill.

i second that one - what are the chances James?

what a waste of postage and paper :???: - i cant really believe that a modern internet biased company spends all that money sending documents that are basically useless! its like a CAD company in the construction industry using a drawing board

There are two issues here. Apparently loads of registrants like the paper based certificate of registration. I'd say the more technically oriented among us don't; they prefer electronic systems. For what it's worth, I am aware that Nominet is working on electronic systems which may cut down on paper though there are all sorts of security issues in trying to protect the registrant's domain names and I doubt Nominet will introduce an electronic system until they are reasonably sure there can be no abuse of it. I'll make a few further enquiries.
