Ignore the emails most registrars are sending. They make it sound like you need to act NOW!!!!!!!! or you'll miss out, but its a load of rubbish.

It's both technically true and a lie at the same time.

Technically true in the sense that you can't "pre" order the domain after .uk goes live, because then it will just be an "order" so from that extremely narrow viewpoint it is semantically correct.

A big juicy lie because we all know there's no need to preorder anything at all.

Presumably this was run past their corporate lawyers and deemed to be just far enough this side of deceitful to be acceptable - it all hinges on what preorder is intended to mean.

So in essence it's not possible to register any good .uk domains unless you buy off someone who has registered it or you buy the .co.uk?? There would have had to be no .co.uk or org.uk registered for the domain at cut-off date for it to be available??

Absolutely spot on. Which is why Acorners have been saying for ages and ages and ages "better buy the .co.uk NOW before .uk launches!"

We'll be getting ours sorted today or tomorrow, assuming things calm down! We must have dealt with about 30-40% more tickets and phone calls yesterday than a normal day - it was absolutely manic and unfortunately there was a lot of confusion. We tried to convey to people that unless you have the registration right (9 times out of 10 the .co.uk) then you can't register the .uk, but we had people contacting us asking if they had the right because they had a .uk.com or if they would get the right because they have the .org and the current .co.uk isn't being used by the owner.

I hope all your extra effort was rewarded by new registrations, as a counterpoint to the frustration and anger from those who misguidedly expected to get "their"* .uk.

*It's amazing how many tweets and forum posts I've seen in the last 24 hours that have phrasing along the lines of "tried to get my .uk but it's reserved for the .co.uk owner" or "tried to get my .uk but someone else stole it first" - there is a built-in assumption that the act of thinking up and checking for the availability of a domain name alone magically makes it "yours". In other words, it's the myth of the "domain name queue of one" all over again...

I think Nominet could and should have approached the launch entirely differently, focusing on informing and educating the ten million who have reserved rights to .uk domains. This still hasn't been done.

I agree.

I do worry about the extra animosity that all this is going to build. I did half-hope to receive at least one or two enquiries yesterday from people looking to pick up the .uk or a domain I hold - but not holding my breath.

I believe they're planning to do so in about 3-4 weeks time. There are 5 whole years, after all. Already, it looks like registrars are facing an onslaught of support requests - imagine having to deal with the avalanche of 10 million existing registrants too. As things stand, this helps stem the tide a little bit. There's no risk whatsoever in a small delay for those who already have the .uk reserved and waiting for them.

I think we should start to see press releases coming out in the next few weeks and months as bigger companies rebrand. They're hardly going to keep quiet about a golden opportunity to get a few more column inches, after all!

So in aggregate, there will be thousands of companies doing PR for the new extension.
