Lol and that's only what we know now. Imagine what will come out in the next week, there is always more. I bet in a weeks time it will come out that they didn't even put a stamp on it :-D. Eff'ing incompetance but that's this government all over, haven't got a clue.

I don't know why people are getting at Allistair Darling for it, it's got Brown's finger prints all over it.

Still couple more years and we have another bunch of incompetants in power.

i know it makes me so angry. sent htrough internal & only a couple of passwords on it.
bank details, names, d.o.b, the lot
they're trying to say no risk of id theft? scandal !

and they are telling us we gotta have id cards and a gene bank etc. can you imagine what could happen to those details? scary stuff :???:

i'm all for the Japanese model. Darling should get issued with the samurai sword and be told to 'get on with it' :-D

it's shocking, isn't it? But then they are the same lot spending BILLIONS of pounds on systems that will never be finished or deployed.

I mean they could pay me TENS of MILLIONS or hell even MILLIONS and I can not finish or deploy something for them.

Guys I am totally in favour of the ID card system, it will be a fantastic weapon against criminals and terrorists. However the technology is not here yet and this government does not have to competence to implement it. Maybe in 15 years time it may work but not today.

But why Allistair Darling, he never made the cutbacks in the CSA, he never made cutbacks in the HMRC, this is Brown and it's only going to get worse now. The tax credit system is nearly unworkable by anyone short of a NASA scientist.

Apparently from people that know him, Darling is a real decent bloke for a Politician and not obsessed with spin. But that's why he's looking like a mug now, Brown is going to drop him as soon as things get hot.

I bet they wouldn't have lost my tax bill and the money I owe them, nope that data is well looked after isn't it!:rolleyes:

Bunch of totally incompetent muppets.

You'd expect such data would have a high level of encryption placed on it during transit, instead probably exported to Excel and password protected it.

Sooner this bunch of jokers get voted out the better.

This has nothing to do with the politicians or government themselves, but was a mistake/breech of procedure/f*ck up/whatever by individual members of staff, who are the same whoever is in power.

(I'm not saying this because of any political persuations, but because I'm fed up of people calling or the mp's to resign as soon as something happens, despite it being out of their control)

[/rant]

Its a record

Just heard on BBC news24 they believe it is a world record.

(the largest amount of personal data to have ever gone missing)

Also....
The BBC have been giving out a helpline telephone number for concerned people to phone, but the news just said viewers have being contacting them to say all they are getting is a recorded message saying they close at 8pm!!!!

Seems no-one took the initiative to keep the phones manned for a few hours longer tonight, given the breaking news!

Don't you just love bureaucracy

Although it wasn't Alistair Darling who handed over the disk to the courier, it was a department under his control, can MP's only be found culpable if they are involved in an incident in the 1st person, if this is the case then they will never be responsible for anything that goes wrong in their departments.

He's not had a great time this week with the Northern Rock fiasco also.

Never could understand the logic of ministers being made heads of departments in areas in which they probably have little knowledge or experience. One week they're looking after transport the next the economy, wouldn't it make more sense to elect people with real world business experience in the relevant area to the position.

It gets better.....
The HMRC has announced it will be writing to every family affected to tell them what we now know.

So thats 7.25 million x 23p (2nd class stamp)

What a complete waste of OUR money.

Laws need to be severely tightened. Any loss of personal data that could lead to identity fraud should be a jailable offence.

This is our lives they are playing with. Bad enough for the parents, what about the future generations? This is the name, address, date of birth and national insurance number of every child in the UK.

I think someone will be held legally responsible for it and the data protection commissioner will likely prosecute and a fall guy will be found. I imagine the person who posted it will be prosecuted, and rightfully so. The people that work for the government are usually the ones who can't get a job in the private sector as they are highly qualified and without any branch of common sense.

what a bunch of numpties (hmrc), and they want us to have Id cards, guess the government won't be using TNT too soon.

I feel so angry and betrayed by my own government.

With todays climate of fear I find it unbelievable that one person is able to download the whole of our countries childrens identities. :(

I wonder how much the REAL bad guys would pay to get their hands on info like this? This would give them a database of 25 MILLION instant identities that will be good for the next 70 years. Thats 70 years of suicide bombers slipping through the net as they assume our own peoples identities to pass our border checks. A truly frightning thought. :(

Lets take a step back look at this logically now that we know how lax the security is........ How easy would it be to infiltrate the dept already? how easy would it be to blackmail one of those that can download? ........... Perhaps it has already been done?

I'm not just talking about Al Qaeda, what about the Iranians or the Russians? or anyone else that takes a dislike to us?

To be able to download/print this type of information should be like you see in the films when they are on the subs wanting to launch a nuke. 2 keyholders and an encrypted code sent direct from Whitehall before any of this info can be gotten.

..........................

This is a breach of national security and i'm 100% with Mr Slater on this one. The man at the top should go. You cannot state the politicians that run the depts are not responsible. They are.

They are the ones that are appointed to oversee and impliment changes as necessary. I dont care if Mr Darling has only been in office a few months. Tuff, he is the man that is there and is responsible at this time. It is his party that has been in power for the last 10 years, so they have had 10 years to ensure nothing rediculous like this happens. Well, it has and it is on his watch so he should go and it should be a warning for the next man who takes his place.

GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER IMMEDIATELY or your out.

...........................

Only last week we had Mr Brown on the news telling us how his government was going to advise industry on the way forward with regards to new buildings and anti terroist measures that should be implemented within and in the same week we learn that our own security forces have hundreds of illegal immigrants working for them! (One even had the task to ensure Tony Blairs car was not rigged with bombs!)

Our national security is a JOKE and sadly it is us that will ultimately pay for it.

Tonight, we must be the laughing stock of the western world. If I could, I would be leaving the UK tomorrow as my childrens future identities are now uncertain.

In case anyone jumps on me, I'm not anti Labour. I am anti not getting our countries national security sorted. It is so lax, it's a friggin pantomine.

.

Here is a quick example of good and bad security measures......

Since 2001, France has installed anti-aircraft missiles around its spent fuel reprocessing facilities.

UK... 2001 to 2003 business as usual. In 2003 it was deemed our nuclear facilities pose a threat so we now deploy armed guards  Yup, thats right, we are going to shoot the buggers out of the sky

.....................

2001 Every household in Southern Ireland is issued Potassium Iodide tablets to be taken in the event of a nuclear disaster. But wait a minute, they don't have any nuclear facilities? Yup, they sure don't. The Irish government has issued them to every household in the event of a nuclear disaster in the UK. (terrorist or otherwise) They have issued them in case there is a UK disaster and the wind is blowing to the west and a radioactive cloud encroaches.

Now lets take a look at the UK......
No household in the UK has been issued Potassium Iodide tablets. (ever)
All nuclear facilities in the UK has a stockpile of Potassium Iodide tablets for every household within a 2 mile radius of their facility and thats it. If you live 3 miles away and the wind is blowing in your direction you are fecked.

The whole point of Potassium Iodide tablets is to stop the thyroid gland being infected and speed is of the essence. How long would it be until the facilities distributed the tablets? The short answer is too long. It is a joke. You only have to look at Chernobyl. It not only affected Russia, it affected the whole of the West.

So Ireland takes the responsible lead and their chief health advisors are laughing at us............ No wonder.

Totally disagree, It's not the fact that it's his department. It's the fact that he has only been there 4 months. This is Brown's management systems as previous chancellor that should be held to account. The treasury also was forced to borrow billions of pounds as tax receipts were down for 2007. The economy is on the belly up and I don't want Brown getting away with it.

Yep Darling maybe held responsible for Northern Rock as he could have sold it to Llyods TSB within days of it going belly up.

Totally agree with you on vocational experience, unfortunately now the guys coming through as politicans are career politicians and never held a job outside politics. Even going back 10 years to John Major, who started out as a bin man.

I think that anyone in government must have spent 5 years running their own business. That would certainly have a affect and you'd have a bit more confidence in them.

-----------

Just wonder how many people are going to empty their bank account's and claim that the government lost their details and that this is what caused it.

Obviously they will have to send them all recorded just in case one gets lost, so you need to factor that into the cost as well

Funny if it wasn't a possibility.....

Shocking news. It is pretty worrying that personal details are going round like that with no much security in place.
