I have a site which is getting some puzzling website traffic.

All of a sudden traffic has jumped, from a base of near zero. The majority of the traffic is not from any search engine, and most visits last no more than the page landed on. Quite a few (though by no means all) are from China. I'm pretty sure this isn't from people just typing the address straight into the address bar as it's a pretty obscure domain... not an obvious one for a type-in. It's also a pretty new site, so it's not been out there long enough for people to have it in bookmarks etc..

Must admit to having no idea where it might be from. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Mike.

Does your analytics say most of the traffic is direct? I mean, its not a link on a Chinese website? If its a large amount of traffic it could be a DDOS depending on the subject of your website.

Probably not the same issue but I noticed a massive increase in traffic to one of my domains last week. Turned out some company had done a mass sms marketing campaign and put my domain in the message by mistake! Not great, particularly when one irate guy was woken up after a night shift by the text and has sent me over 100 emails calling me a c***!

Thanks for the replies.

No, no link from a website. Traffic seems to be direct, though find that unbelieveable with the domain in question. Don't think it's a DDOS, either. I should have been clearer previously: the traffic has jumped compared to what it was, but still no great shakes... just lots compared to previously. Is it possible that search engine referrals aren't being recorded, I wonder?

Seems like you found a downside to all that free traffic! Hopefully the upside compensated...

@ Grant "one irate guy was woken up after a night shift by the text and has sent me over 100 emails calling me a c***!" has kind of made my day in a twisted way. Hope he's stopped :p

@ Mike - if you'd like to PM me a screenshot of IP's/frequency I'm happy to have a butchers. We've seen an increase in non-converting Chinese visits lately, it would be interesting to compare
