Hi,

I've sold a couple of domains on Domain Lore. What's the etiquette around transfers?

My domains are registered at Godaddy so I've been offering buyers a free push if they have a Godaddy account, or to change the IPS tag via customer service (they have been very slow with doing this, but do agree, has taken 3 or 4 days!)

If the buyer instead wishes to receive the domain via a nominet transfer, which costs £12, is it customary for the buyer to pay this charge or the seller?

Thanks!

I didn't realise this.

So nominet is the only way to transfer a UK domain?

A push via Godaddy doesn't count as a transfer?

So when Godaddy customer services agree to change an IPS tag, what is that for?

I'm getting a flustered here, UK domains are a steep learning curve!

I've just made a buyer wait three days for Godaddy to change the IPS tag....

..... and I've just emailed the buyer to inform them that the tag has been changed.

And I still need to transfer via Nominet? I feel like an idiot now.

Yes!

No. You are just sending the domain to another godaddy account, it will still be registered to you.

So when Godaddy customer services agree to change an IPS tag, what is that for?
They are changing which registrar the domain is registered with however, it will still be registered to you.

One of my buyers (not domain lore) actually instructed me to request that Godaddy change the IPS tag so they could take the domain.

If logging on to Nominet is the only correct way to transfer a domain, then what is the point in that step?

If they have there own personal TAG depending on the type they will probably transfer it to themselves

Yes!

So I can't just push a domain to another Godaddy account, and they change the registrant details within Godaddy? They have to pay £12 to Nominet?

Surely if I pushed a domain to another Godaddy account they could just change registrant contact details within Godaddy without paying £12?

It is technically possible that Godaddy if they are an accredited partner of nominet could change the registration info on the name.
If they actually do this in practice is another thing. As you have seen with the 3 day wait UK domains are not there strong point

Until Nominet changed the registrar agreement about a year or so ago the only way to change ownership of a domain was via the £12 process.
In the new registrar agreement nominet said self managed and accredited TAG holders could update the owner details on a domain if they obtained explicit consent to do so.
So if you sold it to a self managed TAG holder this is what they probably did. As I say I'm not sure if go daddy do this with a push they never used to

So in future whenever I sell a domain via DomainLore, I'm just going ahead and asking for their email address to initiate a transfer with them paying?

No talk of IPS tags, no talk of Godaddy pushes, just take their money, initiate Nominet transfer?

Unless a buyer specifically states that they want to do the transfer via an IPS tag change with my registrar?

With a private sale presumably I negotiate a price which reflects the fact that I'm going to be shelling out £12 myself?

The buyer who requested I change IPS tags gave me the tag for Fasthosts, why would they do that? That isn't a private IPS tag, that's a major UK host?

For end users I don't even mention any options it only confuses things I just send the nominet way.

If their a domainer I give the option of a free transfer surprisingly some people still don't want them though.

Why your buyer wanted it moving to that TAG is a mystery to me

Thanks.

When you say a "free transfer", what is one of those?

Just a transfer where you pay the £12?

No I have a self managed TAG so I can perform registrant transfer for free manualy

My brain is going to explode.

So some domainers CAN get free transfers, if they have a self managed tag, in which case changing the IPS tag via Godaddy support is a perfectly acceptable way of transfering domain ownership.

So the DomainLore buyer who provided his tag CAN get a free transfer afterall, and a moment ago when I sent an email apologising for wasting three days of his time I wasn't actually wasting his time, and now I look like a complete idiot because an hour after sending him confirmation that the TAG has been changed I've stuck his email address through nominet to initiate a transfer.

They have made UK domains WAY too complicated.
