Hi,

How long after the renewal date will a .co.uk domain name become available for a different person to register it?

I know of one that the renewal date was 24 July 06 - and I want it but dont know how long it takes to become available to register...

Also, if a company was trading under the name/domain name, what legal rights do they have if they dont renew the domain name? Do they forfit any right for not renewing it?

Thanks in advance!

92 or 99 days (mostly 99)

dropdates.co.uk will work it out for you

You see plenty of companies whom use the .com as their main domain and they forget to pay the reg fees on the .co.uk. ie for example fedex dropped recently.

Just because they let it drop wont mean they have no legal right to it.

Thanks guys. I also wrote to Nominet asking the same and this is what they said:

Dear Damien,

Thank you for your email.

A .uk domain name is not cancelled and made available for registration
until approximately 97 days after the expiry date. Upon reaching the
expiry date, if the associated registration agent has not renewed the
domain name, a reminder email is sent to the current registrant. This is
followed a further 7 days later by a pro-forma invoice by email and by
post, if the agent has still not renewed the domain name on the
registrant's behalf.

After 30 days from the date of the pro-forma invoice, the domain name is
suspended and remains in a status of suspension for a minimum of 60 days.
Following the suspension period, the domain name is cancelled without
further notice and once cancelled, the domain name becomes available for
registration by other parties.

If you can provide the domain name that you are referring to in your
email, I may be able to offer some more specific time frames?

When a domain name is cancelled and re-registered by another party, the
previous registrant loses the ownership and rights to the domain name.
However, in some instances, the previous registrant may try to attain the
registration from the new registrant should they feel they have a greater
right to the domain name, for example, due to trademark or a limited
company name.

This would be done through our Dispute Resolution Service (DRS), further
information for which can be found on our web site at
