rss syndication script for wpress

I wish to syndicate a newsfeed onto the sidecolum on one of my wordpress installs.. I tried one plugin (feedsnap) but it refuses to work (latest wpress, set up according to the docs).. It just spews the [feedsnap]urltoxmlfeeed[/feedsnap] text into my markup rather than the damned feed contents!

can anyone recommmend something simple which might do the job?

on the same topic, i know its possible to have rss on the sidebar, but could it be made so if you click on the link to the full story it takes you to a page on your own site so the full story is there? Obv. giving full credit to the source etc.
