Many of you will know Gordon Dick for the Nominet board: www.nominet.org.uk/governance/board/

And Nigel Roberts who owns the www.channelisles.net registry.

They have setup a website www.scotchspam.co.uk to advise on how to sue UK spammers. Gordon Dick has recently won a case against Transcom who spammed Nominet's mailing list Nom-Steer this time last year:

It's currently making the news all over the world:

Worth a crack - I am currently waiting on three companies who buy lists from notorious UK spammers 'In4tech ltd' to get back to me with an inital complaint :)

not sure if they are Uk based but this just hit my mail box: it smells of spam and dogyness.

Subject: Compensation for your past efforts

Dear Friend.

I am happy to inform you about my success in getting those funds transferred under the cooperation of a new partner from paraguay. Presently i'm in Paraguay for investment projects with my own share of the total sum.meanwhile,i didn't forget your past efforts and attempts to assist me in transferring those funds despite that it failed us some how.

Now contact my secretary in Benin rep,his name is Mr.Paul folouma on his email I.D [email protected] ask him to send you the total of $500.000.00 which i kept for your compensation for all the past efforts and attempts to assist me in this matter.I appreciated your efforts at that time very much. so feel free and get in touch with my secretary Paul folouma and instruct him where to send the amount to you.

Please do let me know immediately you receive it so that we can share the joy after all the sufferness at that time. in the moment, I'm very busy here because of the investment projects which me and the new partner are having at hand, finally, remember that I had forwarded instruction to the secretary on your behalf to receive that money, so feel free to get in touch with Paul folouma, he will send the amount to you without any delay.

you also contact me in this [email protected]

Extend my regards to your beloved family.

Yours Faithfully,
Mrs Maria Joseph.

I do remember their emails from Nom-steer and even still have them. However Transcom seem to think otherwise:

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/computeractive/news/2185149/information-watchdog-encourages

In its defence Transcom's managing director William Smith called Mr Dick an "opportunist".

He told Computeractive that Mr Dick had found his way onto the company's mailing list as they are both part of Nominet - the .uk domain name registry. He also said it was Mr Dick who initially emailed Transcom.

"He had previously sent us a number of circular emails - which we could have seen as spam - and our system had kept his address," said Mr Smith.

Transcom has also set up a website giving its version of events.
