So I bid on a domain on Sedo listed with a Seller's Listing Price: 200 EUR

I bid the full amount, no response.

On chasing they come back and say sorry, we want £xx,xxx for it.

Sedo should ban people like that for wasting peoples time. It's still listed now.

Grrrr

You mean a fixed price listing, or one with a minimum offer price?

Why do they do this? If they show a price of 200 no-one is going to reply and say that's fine, here's 10,000

I agree, they should be banned. The only reason I think they do it is so they get a few bids in as it makes it look more popular and then they maybe display the price what they really want for it? dunno

There's a difference between minimum offer price and the asking/listing price.

It defeats the object when people set the asking price artificially low just so they appear at the top of listings or to get a few bids before upping the price to make it stand out for anyone else looking at that name in the future. Sedo should really do something about.

I wouldn't always blame the seller.

When you bulk add, sedo lets you put a default price in. That is what's probably happened. The seller probably had no idea it was listed at 200 euro's.

Crap system and should have been sorted ages ago..

Was there an input box? And does the text next to the box say "Your offer"? Because if it does, that's the clue that the price represents the start of a negotiation, not a BIN. Domains sold with a genuinely fixed BIN don't have a box, just a button marked "Buy Now".

It's very subtle - too subtle - and frankly I agree with you that it's annoying, but at least that's a cast-iron way to tell the difference, once you get used to the system.

BTW, if you want to skip all the offer/counteroffer nonsense, set the "listing type" pulldown for "fixed price only" and bingo, it's all gone!
