Is it possible to SEO mini sites in order to get a good google ranking for decent keywords? I know natural links back to the site majorly influences your SERPs but is it enough?

For those with mini sites that are well ranked would you care to share your best practice tips?

Are you listed in DMOZ?

LED Bulbs is not in DMOZ, it is a mini site and ranks No.1 in Google.co.uk and earns $5-$20 per day, just some good informative content on site, a couple of pages and some good links, no voodoo or special sauce needed.

Also choose your battles, if the main keyword/phrase typed in only brings back 1-2 million results it can often mean a quicker and easier job ahead of it, if there are tens of millions of results then you need to weigh up whether you are up for the fight and the time/money needed to rank well.
