not had a fag for just over a week now, and feeling quite chuffed with myself.
then i come across this:

Parkinson's disease. The frequency of this degenerative disorder of the nervous system among smokers appears to be half the rate among nonsmokers – an effect recognized by the Surgeon General as along ago as 1964.
Alzheimer's disease. Similarly, the frequency of this degenerative mental disorder has recently been found to be as much as 50%less among smokers than among nonsmokers for example, by the H studies reviewed in the International Journal of Epidemiology in 1991.
Endometrial cancer. There is extensive and long-standing evidence that this disease of the womb occurs as much as 50% less among smokers as documented by, for example, a New England Journal of Medicine article back in 1985. The triggering mechanism appears to be a reduction on estrogen levels.
Prostate cancer. Conversely, smoking seems to raise estrogen levels in men and may be responsible for what appears to be a 50% lower rate of prostate cancer among smokers, although this needs corroboration.
Osteoarthritis. This degenerative disorder of bone and cartilage is up to five times less likely to occur among heavy smokers as documented, for example, by the federal government's first Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Colon cancer, ulcerative colitis These diseases of the bowel seem to be about 30% and 50% less frequent among smokers documented, for example, by articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association and in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1981 and 1983, respectively.
Other benefits that have been suggested for smoking: Lower rates of sarcoidosis and allergic alveolitis, both lung disorders, and possibly even acne. Smokers are also lighter ironically, because obesity is a leading cause of the cardiovascular disease that smoking is also supposed to exacerbate. So you could quit smoking and still die of a heart attack because of the weight you put on.

now im confused:rolleyes:

LOL....

That looks like manipulation of statistics to me...

ie. smokers have shorter life expectation in which to get a lot of those diseases

Therefore, statistically, smokers are seemingly a healthier bunch when concentrating on statistic representation of who's going to kark it from those listed delights...

I'd forego the legal cancer tubes and enjoy not coughing phlegm up when you have a bad cold ;)

Good luck...

I doubt there's many doctors who'd recommend smoking as a healthy "lifestyle choice"

I gave up for six weeks then started to have the odd one, which became the odd few, which became the normal fifteen or so a day.

I have plans to try and give up again. You never know, one of these days might actually kick the habit for good.

I have suffered with Ulcerative Colitis for six years. My disease was so bad, that a few weeks ago I took a trip into hospital to have my colon removed - it was that bad!

The doctor has said in the past that smokers do have 'better' symptoms, however, he said that the other side effects of smoking far outweigh the benefits it might have for sufferers of Ulcerative Colitis. Those side effects being heart/lung disease, emphysema, cancers etc!

What those stats don't tell you is that with UC you have a higher prevalance of bowel cancer - which would be further increased by smoking. So it's not all a win-win!

Rob - do what I did - start running. I gave up smoking 3 years ago and I now run Marathons, Half-Marathons, 10k's etc. I have run 6 Half Marathons in the last 3 months. I've never looked back and never missed the fags! Mind you, my legs and knees are knackered
Ade.

I don't know where you found those stats, but they definitely have been manipulated - perhaps even sponsored by the fag firms themselves... I have studied a lot into psychology etc. recently, and have learned that many of our habits - smoking for one, are because of something deeper down within our beings - it can be true that we use it as a coping mechanism, and it is easy to find another not-so-good habit if you don't have a good support plan in place (Pudsi's suggestion is a good one! It's like quitting drugs, if you just stop, there will be a void that needs to be filled - but you can fill that void with something healthy instead!).
My dad died a few years ago from COPD from smoking for many years - I try and encourage all that I meet to not start or to at least try and give it up if they already have.
Someone mentioned about hypnotherapy on the board recently I believe - that's one way that can be useful (but don't believe those who say 'guaranteed to cure in one or two sessions' - they're scams). Just imagine all the extra domains you could register without having to fork out for the cigs! :)

No, don't start smoking again. I would hate to ever get all wheezy and out of breath from smoking, I even wrote a quit smoking page a few years ago to convince others!

Rgds

Wayne : i smoked for 10 years on 20 per day and one day had my last cig out of a 10 box and said i quit, that was 8 years ago and i absolutely love being a non smoker, everything is so much better such as food and having clear lungs.

Give it up and don't ever go back.

Good luck

52 weeks x £30 ( or more ? ) = £1560 for a nice domain :D

NB* i'm sure i've give you this advice before

Things got a bit on top here a month back so gf and I both started smoking again, her first, I joined in, a few puffs here and I'm smoking 40 in a weekend. They're only £1.50 a pack here but still, I have ceremic teeth so shouldn't be smoking, I think it got into the gum and inflamed a nerve so have been in agony for a few days and the whisky I swilled to quell the pain, I think inflamed my upper lip so now I look like a platypus.

Dare say I've given up smoking again now, easy now that I did for a few years and can again. So no, don't start smoking again. Many things in life can get you in the end, suggest you just live life to the fullest, something I'm failing to do at the moment. Must learn to look after myself first when possible.

RIP Jee

Lung Cancer

That's your biggest fear! I think this usually fatal cancer is defo worth not smoking to avoid and the good news is that after stopping smoking for a number of years your risk of cancer plummets. So its never too late to give up and make the most of your health.

~90% of all lung cancer cases are attributable to smoking. Then there is cancer of the mouth etc...

Better off to find another habit to engage your brain...

Reminds me of seeing a chap on a plane in first class smoking a "smokeless" cigarette. I was going to ask him what it was....

I have never smoked but fidget like crazy so I make sure I have office toys. Every couple of months I take myself out shopping for new toys like bouncing balls, newtons cradles, putty, slime, toys etc etc. Maybe you could the same to relieve stress/anxiety.

Had to laugh.... every couple of months you go shopping for slime..... that's an odd one :p

On the subject of smoking, i am using the children angle to give up i.e its selfish to smoke when you have children and thus increase your risk of early death.

Actually this has not worked so far!! but its the best chance i have.

nearly 5 months now and not even touched a cigarette, i feel bloody brilliant.
i must admit the e-cig is a must if you want to give it up though (in my sig) ;)
