Is Slots a common term in the UK - Europe ?
The name is not of much use in the USA as far as online gambling goes
Does Slots.com have the same universal appeal as
Casino.com - Poker.com ect ...
I wouldn't have paid that unless a very established site with proven revenue.
UK exacts an avearge of 25k per month, not amazing exacts
USA exacts an average of 100k per month, nice exacts but they can't gamble online so not much point.

It's a lot of money, but even with the ban in the US there are still billions of dollars in online gambling. And a lot of the affiliate schemes have recurring payments, so a properly implemented site can expect to see ever-increasing income (e.g. they refer 10 players in the first month, 5 of whom will become regulars. So month 2 they have 10 new plus 5 returnees, and so on...) which over time can probably build to a VERY meaningful amount. Probably not going to make their money back unless they "develop" it somehow, but the money's certainly there if they can figure out how to unlock it.

It's just a referral site with links to slot games/casinos .. the traffic must be huge to justify $5.5mil .. i think that i would rather own Bingo.com

Agreed, this has to be someone looking to build a brand, I can't see this ever turning a profit otherwise.
IIRC Vegas casinos make around 70% of their profits from slots rather than tables so this is a genre defining domain in the rather lucrative gambling industry.

If you in the casino, gambling game etc it’s a very good domain too own the potential is defiantly there the slot machines are the biggest money maker for so many casino's so it would make more sense to own the term for your biggest money maker than not ?

i dont want to disagree but would you not want to sign up to a site called slots.com than slotmachine.com that the highest excats. also i think it is only a matter of time before the american market opens up, this i believe is worked into the price. however something like loans.com or business.com (the really big names) are there for holding on for a few years, get what you can out of them and sell it on. like sex.com, its a good name but really it might be better to develop a few sites that could provide the more group needs teen/milf.... than spending $15m+ on a name.
i think that also having just a basic word like poker.com 888.com or slots.com means that the basic user could go on to that site by just typing it in the browser and i think that gives the name alot of credit.

considering poker.org was recently sold for $1m I think this price isn't too high in comparison. And many of the gambling TV adverts I see nowadays are as much about slots (like the Phil Tufnell ads, and the Gladiator ones) as they are about poker. So perhaps this further represents a slight shift in the industry?
Also; I seriously doubt they have bought this domain based on the number of exact searches and traffic it currently has. You don't buy a domain like this for the business model purely to rely on google searches. Shame we don't know who the new owner is.

A very good point, someone who is flashing around $5.5m isnt going to look onto google adwords and say yer ticks all the boxes lets buy.
but really if you consider how much a company like partypoker make a year. and say a name like poker.com was for sale at $10m? would you go for it? i think i would (if i had a bit more for development after), that outlay at the start would mean that you get a few more customers who remembered your name over your competitor. if your talking about $10m or even $20m for a name like poker ten its going to pay dividends and paying that first sum at the start is going to seem small amount in the future.
....having said what i just said that i believe that only applies to a number of domains like that. something like book/books (owned by barnys and noble) i dont think are worth the $5m i think were paid for them because its a very small return on those where as gaming the average user produces 150 pounds a month for gaming, porn and othe topics.

In my view the whole online gaming ban in the US was a sham. It was dominated by the big UK companies who were first of the mark with online gaming from what I hear.
A ban for a year or two whilst the Amercian gaming companies get their act together and then all of a sudden the ban is lifted?
In my view the ban will be lifted shortly anyway, in which case it would have been a bargain.
