i registered smrtphn.com

it is the shortest word on google search that asks

DID you mean smartphone?

Does anyone think that gives this name value in the future as computers guess what you are trying to find?

To put it another way, is smartphn.com better than smartphone.com

if you type smrtphn into google it asks if you mean "smartphone"

it is as far as i know the shortest word that does this

No. No value unless developed. And even if you developed it I would be very wary of lost traffic due to typos...

I do wonder though if the site was developed google may rank it higher when people sesrch for smartphones.

As more smartphones are being used people dont want to type in whole words, they will just stab at the virtual keyboards and hope for the best. i do already with a propper keyboard, asuming google will know what i mean.

People, and i assume this includes yourself, don't just stab at their keyboards.

However, generally if a typo is made they don't correct it as they have learnt google knows what they really meant.

IMO building a site to try and rank for a typo is a waste of time, especially when immediately the user will get a link asking them if they want to search for the correct keyword/spelling.
