no thankyou or anything, i'm not doing any more :???:

Pretty much the attitude that will make people not donate. Most people post up lists to help others out, not for a reward.

Saw carpetburn.co.uk is available :)
Not anymore. Do I owe thou a donation?

Smokin I totally understand your frustration.
However a donation is meant to be something that is optional and not obligatory if someone takes a domain.

Personally I do give donations but not eveytime. For example if I gave you a donation for a domain I took today (I haven't but just for arguments sake) I may not give a donation if I took another the next week and the week after. Otherwise it could get silly and no one likes to give away money.

On the flip side you post domains you see and some people use them, others post domains they see and you may take one too. It's not all about remuneration, it's about offering help to a community of people.

Swings and roundabouts.

Another user on here asks for donations to charity and if I use one of his domains I make it a point to give to charity as I feel this is the right thing to do (plus it's tax deductable :p )

Just to give a little more perpective, I have picked up a few dropped domains on here and I will go back and give donations in the future, when I have sold some on! At the moment, I seem to be slightly obsessed with buying and have yet to sell a domain. :(

Another viewpoint is that many of the domains that are posted on Acorn are by-products of someone's hardwork. ie. They've trawled through the availables, kept some good ones for themselves, then posted the rest. Am I wrong?

As I get more into this whole domain thing, I'm becoming more fussy about what I buy, so if I find anything of interest I have started to post it up on here.

What you also have to remember is that just because names are posted here as available, some will be registered by people who use other resources for available domains as they will appear on other lists etc.

Absolutely i agree.. This part of the forum is members only though..
Anyway i think you guys have summed it up pretty much, blimey i'm not bitter or anything! Perhaps i should have kept my mouth shut didn't wanna rub anyone up the wrong way..

Just a thought ...

Not at all. If you can't express your opinion on t'internet, then where can you?? You may have prompted a few more of us to make donations in the future!!

One last thing from me .... possibly ..... some people will be unsure of what to donate. They may have picked up a domain they think is work £1000 and think about donating £10, but when they post in the Appraisal section, people say it's worth the Reg fee. Therefore, it's perhaps the more experienced guys who know the value of a domain who are in a position to make the appropriate donation??

I second this statement entirely. Don't worry about raising your opinion smokin as it's valued and relevant. However some may have a difference of opinion but they're not necessarily rubbed the wrong way by your comments mate :)

With regards to donations it is a grey area to be honest, I think the word donate is something you take upon yourself. If you want to donate £1, £10, £100 this is your call. With regards to being worth the reg fee, remember a domain is what you make of it ;)

No one ever remembers where they got the domain from, it could be a year before you sell it and who tracks what list they found it in?

Best solution to me is a donation on registration but not everyone will give you anything, that's life.

Donations of £1 aren't worth the PayPal fees

I usually donate either a fiver or a tenner if I reg something from here.

Everybody has to make a living, and if it keeps a bit of my cash to keep this place going then whats the big bloody deal?

very valid and straight to the point... in addition to the "wrong thread to discuss donations flame" it is not just a matter of banging a list up of random names / words / combos etc etc... yes there are the odd good single finds that are posted and sometimes, for a noob these can be very tempting... even experienced domainers have registered some DN's months after a post is made of what appear to be "worthless" names....

at the end of the day, the "donation" way is best, then IF you find that one you have registered for a few bucks and donated $20(£10 average here per name) sells for $x,xxx then very well done!

we have sold, posted, donated, researched names for many, many years and what makes domaining still FUN is the element you might just be the buyer, by mistake of the next boo.com or diamonds.com domain...

as time online goes on, the generics we all love will just disapear from lists, the more and more parking pages and "auction houses" come into the business... shame but that is the way most are going...

just our 2c worth... :D

It's fair enough, personally I'd prefer to see it like mxm said where you make a donation if you make something on it rather than just reg it. As you might buy a complete waste of reg fee + donation. But of course that will take a fair amount of honesty from people to remember who posted the list in the first place and come back and donate. I do see your side from the guys posting the lists, but just because someone reg's it, it doesn't mean it will make a profit otherwise you'd have reg'd it beforehand.

Personally I do donate, but sometimes it's a few days later as I reg most of the non urgent ones through oneandone and it can take 24 hours for them to be registered.

I hope people do continue to post lists, but understand if they don't.
