Check the domain with rdap.uk and see what status codes it has.
'Suspended' in the Whois normally corresponds with 'server hold' which on its own won't tell you much, but if it also has 'server delete prohibited' then the domain is probably under a DRS/legal dispute or one of Nominet's protection mechanisms (eg Domain Watch) was activated and was never resolved by the registrant.
