Thought I would start a wee discussion on SEO...

On average:

1. How much do you spend per month on SEO?

2. How long does it take you to rank a site for its main term?

3. What's your top choice for SEO?

I'll go first...

1. Small XXX for personal sites and low XXXX for employer

2. New sites seem to be taking longer. I'm finding a few weeks is now turning into a few months.

3. Great on site work with quality content followed by a variety of backlinks

Sorry, I really find in any circumstance where you are building a brand slowly, natural is best and that doesn't require any SEO investment apart from what you can do yourself. Uncluttered coding, image and link tags, unique content, small file sizes, relevant links, robot scans etc.

Plus many websites are built on platforms such as Wordpress these days where quality SEO plugins can do a decent job for zero outlay.

I (personally) feel the requirement of SEO experts/companies is limited these days.

Don't apologise mate your opinion is valued :)

Going off track already but..

I (personally) feel the requirement of SEO experts/companies is limited these days.

It's evolving a bit now, still lots of different types of SEO work out there, penalty removal is big for instance

Outreach/ guest blogging seems to be the big one these days. I'm bombarded by "can we work together... We can write a great piece for you..."

Edit to answer OP questions:

1 - zero
2 - been a while since I tried a new site but my last effort was within a month or so
3 - anything that creates link bait!

1. Depends how you add it up :)
2. Depends on the term :)
3. Influencer relationships

SEO has its place, but its a minor space compared to the big questions for a successful website:

- What problem does my website solve for a person?

- What emotion am I creating for a person?

- What value am I adding to a person's life?

If you can answer these questions, then with a very little bit of promotion, you should start to build traffic and maybe a community.

Rgds
