So who has a memory of a Website store from 12+ years ago they built?

Who had a website that sold stuff online?

A mate and I wanted to get online with a shop - ANY type of shop just something ONLINE and decided it had to be light in weight, fun, cheap to post, and cheap to buy & small to stock.

Thats when we decided Jokes, Masks and Magic tricks was the answer.

I think it cost around £600 for stock and £1500 for the website build hosting etc.

Sold loads and was just as Silly Jokes .co.uk started too - which could have been us!

Ah, the gifs!! Me 'eads gonna explode!

Thank goodness for html4 & css2.1!

I moved into coding and hosting in around 1999 and started my first solo hosting company in 2000.

Kinda shocking how basic it was and to think I made good money on this before selling out around 3-4 yrs later.

I can't post the name we changed to in 2001 tho as it was sold with the business, but yeah I thought as a "l33t" coder having a zero in the name was a cool idea :P

I can't claim that I designed or built that earlier version. I bought the site off an internet company, missing the sql database and on the agreement that I changed the design of it.

The internet company was run by 3 lads and was huge at the time (abc verified traffic bigger than Yahoo one month). They sold me on the idea of making a living on the net more than anything, I knew sod all about the net when I bought the site. They had very funky barn conversion offices with 3 Lotus Elises parked outside, and a pool table and a Slush Puppy machine inside. Those were the days! Said internet company soon fell into disrepute for some very dodgy practices...

Already more than a year old at the point of the snapshot (though only about 5 months under its own domain)

The really old-old site is gone because it was on free space that my then-ISP provided.

Jeepers you got into domains very early Edwin.

Id be very interesting to read a detailed bio by you, when you got into domaining, how you managed to get britain, cambridge etc

I find it all very interesting, would love to hear other peoples stories too..

Maybe I should start a thread about it, or has there already been one in the past with a similar theme?.
