Anyone read the rich list today?

I was reading through it looking for internet related stuff and I see the two guys who started moneysupermarket.com valued at about £500m each

What was of interest was that their company was valued at £1b with an annual profit of just £30m that's about 30X annual profit!!!

I'm guessing the value of the company is based on an earning based valuation rather than an asset based one, I can't see them having that much in the way of assets.

Now I don't see a huge jump from their business model to the domain model of advertising and affiliate sales.

That would mean that for every £1k your domains earn per year after registration fees etc. they could potentially be worth £30k if the investment market ever woke up to domains.

Now that would be nice :D

I never did understand brummies

A company is a valued on future earnings, so I could be earning £2 today but be worth £1,000 on the stock market.

The brand name employees staff, they now do TV adverts, they are possibly on a network somewhere, so they have to pay network fees, plus affiliate fees.

Then they have to pay tax etc so so what they probaly actually make isnt as close to the 1bn the sunday times says.

Not forgetting the hosting fees but they probaly use their own server now, which takes up a lot of money with their kind of hits.

Plus other advertising, plus probaly office space etc etc.

So the figure is loose about what they are worth, a friend of mine earns reasonably about 5k to 25k a week depending upon how his companies stock goes up money isnt really real until its in the bank, a lot of stats are made up of lucid figures especially for the sun owned times (spits and spits again).

If you look at most of the people here with say 1,00 domain names thats £50,000 if they have dot coms and nets and org thats probaly £100,000 at a very conservative figure.

Plus add on sedo and other doman parking earnings thats £150,000 easy, then look at year two so add a bit more on for inflation and extra earnings so they can add maybe another £50,000 on top of that.

The chances are theres a few million quid in respects for domain names floating around in this forum alone.

I sit on £10,000 or more for one domain name, dot com and co.uk £2,000 for one but probaly more like £5,000 so thats £15,000 with three domains by me alone.

I could probaly sell another domain for 5 grand but thats all fantasy figures until it hits the bank.

Thats how money men work in the city, they look at what something earns and what it can earn and comes up with a net worth.

Reasonably they could be making nothing at the moment as could be in debt and just looking good for the sake of it.

Remember there are a lot of rich people who are poor who just live on credit with their black american express with unlimited credit.

I'm too tired to do the maths but if you work out at a top whack say £100 divide that by a billion and see what figure you come out with.

So how many £100 sign ups you need or a billion.

Regards

Mark

They make £30 million ;)

.

Yeah he lost me at 'I never did understand brummies' ;)

What have brummies got to do with it, not that I have anything against brummies :)

Oh and Mark, I think you may mean predicted future earnings unless you are talking about the Mystic Meg school of company valuations

Predicted and also Mystic Meg are both the same

All hogwash that is pulled out of thin air.

If you goto a business manager at your local bank and say well I earn £10 a year but next year I'm expecting £15 then thats predicted and mystic meg as no one knows what the future holds.

I predicted that I was going to stop buying domain names but I think I'm coming out of the closet.

I've just brought my first org.uk and me.uk domain name.

Does my arse look big in this? ;)

Always thats why I've brought so many domain names in the past couple of days lol

Going too be crying next month when I see the invoice, going to have to sell my body well ok that wont raise much or wash windows too pay it off.

Hopefully can make my money back within a year for each domain name purchased or thats the plan anyway either that or find some mugs to buy them from me lol

Domain names for sale anyone? ;)

Don't be sorry, I wasn't inviting you!

I have the time so if I pick up a couple of useful tips or ideas, it'll be worthwhile.
