Cybersquatting, for sure. Here's the test: if the show hadn't been broadcast, would the person who regged it have done so. Answer: not in a million billion years, it's not a combination of first/lastname that springs to mind "randomly".

I grit my teeth when I see it - however, there are plenty of people who list "famous people's domains" (and in this case, she didn't qualify last week, but she certainly does now!) for sale on here too. Personally, I think there should be a rule against supporting those kinds of sales on Acorn, but that's a side-debate...

Would agree... up to the community to try and police itself.

Yeah i have 2 celebrity names but after considertion and a lot of research i have decided to scrap celebrity names, i am hoping to establish myself as a reputable trader and do not want to be a cybersquatter or have a DRS against me.

At the end of the day there is no college course teaching you about domaining and it is all self taught, you learn as you go along, i have been doing a lot more reading this year and i am now going to surrender my celbrity names.

I did try selling them but not going to try again.

Reading comments from the likes of Rob and Edwin i think it would be wise to listen.

Thanks Doodlebug

Whilst I believe that 'celebrity' domaining is a sticky wicket it never ceases to amaze me that a pre-recorded TV programme like the one Susan Boyle appeared on does not register the domain names involved - certainly ones like Susan who they are instantly aware will go places.

You would have thought that for the £3-4 a domain costs to register, the programme's management company would automatically register any that got through into the latter stages of the show or at least the ones they thought might make the last 10.

Incidently, what would be the position if someone like Simon Cowell registered Susan's domain name - would that be seen as Cyber Squatting?

This is just further proof that joe bloggs is nowhere near realising the power of the internet, or how valuable names can be :(

Simon or Sycotv/Freemantle would only have any intelectul property rights if Susan had signed a contract with them, what they should do is suggest to top auditionees that they register their own name but then Simon wouldn't want them having their own site, he would want people to look for her on one of Simons sites.

One thing for sure Simon or at least his legal team definitely know what they are doing as they have won a previous DRS.

If the owner of susanboyle.co.uk is on here, reading this, then do the right thing and hand it over to her. There's already starting to be negative press over this, and that hurts ALL professional domainers.

some sad muppets have even registered stavrosflatley.co.uk / com / net

did any one see the dance group FLAWLESS, think they will be in with a runnin, gutted the names are gone though,

Add to the co.uk .org, .org.uk, .info, .biz, .me.uk and .tel all registered in April 2009.
Same thing happens with the Big Brother contestants etc.

barely legal - might get away with it

would you say this was cybersquatting or canny domaining.

Personally I think its a cybersquatter reg unless its for Susan Boyle or the company involved. if your asking who is susan boyle check out.
YouTube - Susan Boyle - Britains Got Talent 2009 Episode 1 - Saturday 11th April

I'd say it was borderline and could go either way

as content has been put on the site to make it look like a "fan" site they stand a chance of getting away with it

but what about using copyright photos - that's really dangerous!

What kind of "fan" takes another persons name in the hope of gaining a profit through their exploits? I don't think this case is borderline, you've only got to take a look at all the adds to see where the real intent is.
Anyone happy to reg celeb names does not have a guilty conscience and probably doesn't give an ounce about anyone elses thoughts or copyright issues.

Susan Boyle is going to make it really big. Then you will be told that she as "intellectual property rights " over her own name.
If you were another "Susan Boyle" , you might have a reason, but the chances that there are not. So, depending on her management.......because Susan herself might not give a fig !!......you might well be asked to hand it over.

Mind you !! Who or what is Charlotte Church. There are many cities called Charlotte, including one in North Virginia with 400,000 population. It is in the Bible Belt, so Charlotte has very many churches . So the term Charlotte Church can mean more than one thing.
