Is there any way to do a TAG change at UK2 without being charged £12.99+vat for the pleasure? Or do I just walk the chap through logging into Nominet and doing it himself?

Anyone else think it is unreasonable to charge more to leave than to register the name in the 1st place?

If you've had the domain with them for a year they don't charge the £12.99. I agree that it's ridiculous that such a charge exists.

Hmm,

How do you get to this free transfer? The customer let me have the control panel password and it got as far as requesting payment, this is a uk and has been on uk2 for many years. The help pages are far from helpful :(

What I do is move away from uk2 through nominet, then once it's definitely moved away send a support ticket to UK2 telling them that I want to cancel the domain and no longer wish to renew it. They seem very particular about the need to manually tell them that you moving away.

If you want to complete the whole process through uk2 you should be able to do it via these steps:

@ Alex, is this from the 123-reg site of any help?: http://www.123-reg.co.uk/uk2.shtml

It says you'll be charged if the domain has been with UK2 for less than 2 years, so I'm guessing that if you go through the payment part it wont actually charge you if it's been there more than 2 years.

Start at http://www.uk2.net/move_away/login/

NOTE: Please be aware if your domain has been with UK2.net for less than two years, Uk2 will charge you to move the domain away from them.
1

Enter the domain name that you want to move, then the password (this is your account password), and click the 'Log In' button.
2

Scroll down until you see the box 'Enter Nominet TAG'. In this box, type in '123-REG'. Then click the 'Update Now' button.
3

Then you will see your domain on the next screen. Click on "Yes, transfer (name of domain) to 123-reg" and then fill in the payment form to allow your domain to be transferred.
4

Confirm your payment and submit.
5

You will then be presented with a reference number on screen with instructions to print out and fax to UK2.
6

UK2.net may ask additional questions to prove your identity for the transfer.
7

Wait until you get confirmation from UK2. If you don't hear from them, contact UK2.net support to confirm the transfer has happened at http://support.uk2.net

This is the UK2 section for moving domains away just for reference for anyone else: https://kb.uk2.net/domain-names/transferring-a-domain-away-from-uk2/

Oh, maybe it is 2 years. Yes, that would make sense. In either case, since it's been with them for years you definitely shouldn't be charged.

The "Cyber Travel Out Order" process generates a payment request, no option here to transfer for free, hence the initial question.

@ Alex, I only mentioned it as one of the webhosts I use is 50webs.com, and for their free hosting service I used to have to go through the Paypal payment process to extend my free hosting plan there, but it didn't actually charge me, thought it might have been similar at UK2.

The easiest way will be to follow my initial advice then (do it through nominet + then submit cancellation ticket). It's odd that it generates a payment request by default when you go through the official route. I don't think they've changed their policy, so it's likely just another tactic to try to stop people leaving.

If still in doubt, and you want to it it all through uk2, submit a ticket asking them how you can transfer through them for free, mentioning that a payment request comes up. Looks like these are the only two options.

Done all that before asking here!

If it was my account, I'd go with it, but is a customer's account, so can't go round clicking on payment options :)

Looks like it might be a Nominet transfer process as there's not been any response to a support ticket yet.

Yeah, probably your best bet then. Let us know how you get on!

Now I know why I got Nominet membership all those years ago, you just waste so much time with these large faceless corporations :(

Finally got a reply from support saying the transfer should be free, however, need to wait for billing to advise how this can be done - Good job this is not urgent :)

So much for support! They finally agreed that the domain transfer should be free and proceeded to transfer to 123-REG instead of the requested TAG. You couldn't make up this sort of story if you tried!

Sounds like a nightmare at every turn. I just moved one away from uk2 yesterday, but went the nominet route, then asked uk2 to remove the domain from my panel rather than move it anywhere. For whatever reason, they didn't charge the £12.99 even though the domain hadn't been with them for two years. Got lucky.

I've not used a consumer ISP for ages as I am a Nominet member, you can see why people have such difficulty.

On the flip side, praise where it is due, I was able to log into my old 123-reg account, raise a support request as the transfer in process didn't seem to find the domain or associate it with my account, the domain was in my account in less than 30 mins and transferred out to my TAG in a few minutes with no issue.

At least 123-reg are on their game then. This thread should be pretty useful for those in a similar situation, since it's so thorough. Glad you got it sorted in the end!

That was part of the intention of posting (as well as seeing if there were any magic tricks anyone else had done before)
