is, imho that for a decent sale to take place it requires someone or some company to really want your treasured domain that you've caught or been hoarding for years. In reality I find that many of *those* who would have *liked* to have our said domain have made-do for so long the prospect of owning this fabulous domain is no longer that appealing.

This leaves us with only one viable option.. has anyone tried Lidl sunflower seed bread?

I took my first ever trip to a Lidl last Wednesday. I'd been meaning to go for a while but never got round to it. The prices are pretty good, and so far the food has been pretty good. I intend to put up a few reviews of their food on the LowPrices.co.uk blog when time allows. So far I've tried the fruit and nut, the jaffa cakes, ham, sliced roast beef, cherry jam and coleslaw. I didn't buy any bread though :D

So you're saying that in order to make a domain sale you need to have somebody who actually wants to buy it?

I suppose it depends on the domain, the industry etc. If you've always got new players coming into a niche then you might be able to sell to one of them.

Nobody seemed able to grasp my viewpoint that if someone had wanted carinsurance.co.uk they'd have bought it already, and the chances of it now selling were near non existent.

I wonder what Invincibles point of view on this is? infact where is he? has he been banned?

It only didn't get bought in the past though because the seller clearly would rather hold onto a dream then take a nice amount on money in reality.

But the ship has sailed hasn't it.

But the dream lives on! and hopefully he finds it more satisfying than hard cash.

It's like saying everything that can be invented has been invented. There will always be opportunity, and always be buyers and sellers.

I made a rather large domain sale the other day; took a few hours sending out a communication to around 200 companies within the relevant industry but one showed great interest immediately and the deal was doing within an evening. The company had been around for a long time, but obviously the domain fit their intended purpose.

If you want to sell names and make top dollar its easy invent a time machine and sell them when you should have years ago...

Technology was main drive in name sales and also main in there demise.

Don't suppose you can share the name?

I never intended to get into domaining, it's more of a hobby than a real business for me, but I've got about 300 now.

I don't know whether it's actually worth the time to contact end users...

I only flip names, don't retain them, but it was absolutely worth contacting end users on this occasion.

It can also be worth contacting end users due to the occasional furious email rant that you get back.

That depends on whether you are capable of spotting valuable domain names or not!!!

Rgds

I do understand the general premise :)

What I mean is I'm not sure my time is well spent on researching/contacting end users for my domain 'hobby' when I could be getting on with building my business :)

There has been a few times where I have sent out emails to companies which my domain names are related to. They have pretty much paid £xxxx on the spot for them, just to have them... I know that if I had put the very same domains on here they would not sell for over £100. The majority of these domains are still just forwarded or not used years later...

Sometimes companies will just have them for the sake of it. They have big budgets and would rather own them than allow competitors to make use of them or they may plan on using them in the future. Who knows?

this is the approach i am starting off with. looking to sell market related but not extortionate.

no success yet, one or two interested, but early days, only be on it for less than a week.

i'm trying to be a bit "out of the box" too, approaching corporate with domain names that feature a name they 'might' be likely to run a deal or promo on at a later date.

my two tips would be:

1. Do NOT get attached to your domain. Emotionally or anything else.
2. Look for new trends and niches. Eg wearable tech, drone tech etc.

Put these 2 points into action and you may be able to turn a profit on your domains :)
