What makes LLL valuable is simply their use as acronyms for companies. Due to being short they are more memorable too.
There are probably more potential end users for abc.co.uk than qkh.co.uk, therefore some letters are deemed 'better' than others, depending on the target language.
I'd look at it this way; any domains worth more than their registration fee would have already been bought by now -- either by individuals, or the domain registrars themselves with the same idea of reselling them.
I don't think there have been any 3-letter combos of .COM domains for years (if I had only jumped on that back in '95) but they seem to have quite a bit of value on the aftermarket.
