BBC NEWS | Technology | Domain name shake-up

With the possible changes allowing any extensions how do you think this will affect domain values

.fred
.world
etc

and if you were going to set up a registar to manage a new extension of choice - what would it be?

What a crazy idea, it's like having a London 020 number and living in France, what's the point?

.ACORN gets my vote

[yesterday]

a) any two letter would be the best investment
b) typos of .com etc like .ccom .come .dotcom etc
c) .web .www .email .game .porn .personal .dot .love .private .secure .chat .blog .search .forum .news .finance .money
I think judging by my click through prices I'd be registrar for .debt !

I think the divide between great domains and average domains will get that much wider.

Great will always be great, average will become below average.

.co.uk will have to differentiate itself somehow - maybe use some of the enormous registrar profits to start promoting it.

seems they disagree

BBC NEWS | Technology | Internet overhaul wins approval

"A complete overhaul of the way in which people navigate the internet has been given the go-ahead in Paris."

The new system should come in next year.

"Individuals will be able to register a domain based on their own name, for example, as long as they can show a "business plan and technical capacity".
While companies will be able to secure domain names easily based on their intellectual property, some domain names could become subject to contention and a bidding war. "

What aload of crap

indeed. I certainly wont be paying to get firstname.surname

From Article:

However, the cost of setting up a domain - at least initially - will be an expensive business.

"We expect that the fee will be in the low six figure dollar amounts," said Dr Twomey.

[Takwa]

Well at least it's national news for domains, didn't we complain there wasn't much news to boost the market before?

They are just going to devalue each other, the brands for the .com and .co.uk's are established.

This is going to be a cybersuqaters nightmare. They are going to cybersquat the hell out of each other and devalue all the extensions thinking they have some by the balls until people say, what's the point trying to fight them then never pay up. Google raises the value of .co.uk .com's because there is less chance of cybersquating and hey bingo, people who bought into this have lost their money and .com .co.uk's are worth more.

Should be fun to watch people get their fingers burnt.

It is being taken VERY seriously by business. I am spending a LOT of time on this and have been for the last 4 months, although obviously this week's Paris announcement has brought more attention to it.

[julian]

someones bound to try and do a .UK or .GB

Someone ought to fork out the £xxx, xxx and run the registry for .landrush then all the PR could be kept in one section of the net.

I am not convinced newsgroup style addressing will sit well with the general public.

I would suggest reading the docs out there as it is quite misleading what is being suggested in various media outlets regarding this 'shake up'.

[JasonD]

Although I'd love to take control of that domain they won't let it through. ISO country codes are essentially excluded already by the nature of CCTLDs.

police.uk
nhs.uk
co.uk
org.uk
etc. are essentially all subdomains of .uk so anyone who would get .uk would get all of the above and more, whilst also taking control of every further dubdomain underneath them!!!

[purg]

This would mean .xxx & .sex hlq could be owned by you or me! paying the $xxx, xxx would be chicken feed.

Another news artical is found here > the register

[JasonD]

Unoffically I can say that the process will start next year with an application fee of $500,000

If more than one accepted applicant (technically compentent etc etc etc) for the same extension then look forward to a huge bidding war.

I would say don't expect there to be any public (post sunrise style period) new extensions available to register domains under until at least the 3rd quarter of 2009

And at that point expect more sunrises than there are every day

I loved the quote about how this was opening the market as someone who wanted Fishing.com couldnt have it but now they could have Fishing.sport or the like.

Is the Icann formular something like Choice = Warehoused names + 1 ?

The fact is there is in reality infinate combos right and left of the dot and some will be more desirable than others.

Ever remember the 3G phone network that was auctioned off for billions and did nothing.

This will impact asia and the arabs who use different characters the most.

The amount of money people are going to have to find to buy .hotels is crazy, do you think the people who buy .hotels are going to let you reg london.hotels for £6? Then there will be .hostels or .stay or even .hotel

They need to build an infrastructure to run it, staff to staff it and how many cities in this world? 3000 that would warrant a decent amout for that name. How much can you seriously charge for a domain to make the registry pay.

The only way to make it pay is to run the sites themselves, which is pointless.

All the best

Certainly a good decision for those who provide registry services, not that I can think of any off hand

So bigco can't get bigco.com so buys .bigco for $500,000
That then ties that one up - i.e. there is only one more domain available .bigco (so it's effectively just like one more extension).

I only see that affecting high ticket brand names.

Argument for generics - bigco wants loans.com as brand
can't buy it
bids for .loans as brand
against others that want it so goes higher than $500,000

Then tries to make money from it:
doesn't want to dilute brand by selling domains from it
= same as buying expensive domain

Maybe someone like tesco will give "free" emails and "free" web sites to all customers in exchange for throbbing insurance ads down their throat.
But they could do that already.

If big entrepreneur wants to be their own nominet (e.g. .uk.com)
then it's a big risk for them and will take time for them to develop and promote their extension
and what looks good now will perhaps not look so good when there are millions of other extensions competing on what was a decent marketplace.

They may try to buy e.g. .loans and then try to get all the banks on it but that's not much different to running a loans.com

So I think there may be a landrush on just the best domains but given that good domains on crap extensions e.g. .im don't really do anything for your brand or position as a website then I don't see much opportunity for the domain landrusher. except perhaps say com.loans with the hope of confusing all punters 3 years down the line as to what is the original domain.

Google's algorithm will determine what is an attractive extension.

Explorer and Firefox will also determine worth - i.e. if you type in a name without the extension - what extension will they default to (by default).

So. For domains that are already worth over $500,000 plus management fee, then expect one more entrant to the market. (I don't think they'll be particularly worried.)

It's like domaining with much bigger money and suddenly they're interested.
