multiple trademarkers & multiple uk company registrants
who speculatively register things in the hope of selling them on for big profits
or is that domainers.
Anyway it doesn't matter. All are trying to make money in a capitalist free market system and as long as they act within the law it's OK.
But you should not be able to sell the same thing twice, the first purchaser is the rightful owner.
If you bought a co.uk domain and thought you owned that name webspace for business/commercial uk use, you didn't, it was merely a ticket for a future prize draw.
Sounds a bit Nigerian to me.

Maybe they had a crystal ball or perhaps a little bit of inside information what was on the horizon...
I recently applied for a TM and was turned down because the word was a generic term. I was told by the IP expert that it would always be a persons right to use that word and express it on a t-shirt or website etc. The only protection I had was in the actual brand logo with the generic word in question used together.
If I wanted it tm a word, seems it had to be a 'facebook' type job.
Seems like a lot of flappign going on here over nothing?

Very true - I was thinking too much of the 'insider knowledge of .uk domains' and wrote that in haste in all honesty.
Anyone could take a punt on the hopes of it coming in handy, I don't think its insider information.

I love the timing of this...many domainers are really struggling to move stock then having to contend with Google Panda/Penguin updates knocking decent sites...I would love to know the brainchild behind this latest idea, maybe we should ask the Government to put the registry to Tender ? are Nominet trustworthy of running the UK Domain Registry ? there are not exactly squeeky clean are they with there history !!!
You really don't want that! With the digital economy act ,the goverment has the power to take over Nominet if they wish (I believe). That's why I think this is such a poor move. It's flagging up the need for stronger governance.
It just demonstrates how erroneous the pecking order is. I would imagine their are more Marks at IPO UK that are of the same vein.

It's hard to believe this .UK launch proposal is only a few days old. The fun and games that are going to develop over the next months is going to be pretty amazing to watch and hopefully participate in
I have to say I'm getting quite enthralled by the whole scenario getting played-out - Mind you I do lead quite a boring life, so it adds to my entertainment for the coming winter months

Indeed - my comment above was from a spectators view at a sports match. It does impact on me to a certain extent. My beer money has dried-up but at the same-time I don't wish to make light of the genuine hardships this may indeed cause many

all the companys that i have spoken to are not bothered about the .UK and they wont be bothering with securing the .UK extension if this happens

I think I agree with Sam if you are targeting the small business end of the market then I am not sure this is going to end up that much difference.
I do think, however, that reseller sales are going to struggle over the next months until some clarity exists. By which time, I think we are going to see less catches, less speculatative registrations and less renewals. All of which will probably see the UK register begin to shrink (renewal rates already at lowest they have been) and Nominet's revenue drop.

They didn't understand a) what was happening now, b) what might happen next, c) what that might mean and d) how they should adapt their plans in the meantime.
Annoying when deals are agreed and invoices raised, but I feel some sympathy for them.
For people who have heard about it, it is obviously going to take a while for the truth/reality to sink in. I.e. that for most domains, owning the .co.uk will most likely give you an advantage on securing the .uk *if* and when it happens.
