I'll think you'll see the "Goal-posts" moved (probably several times) before anything too damaging to what after-all is a govenment entity emerges.

Thanks websaway - thats an interesting opinion on the proposals. So he is almost suggesting anyone could take down your website by identifying the "Security Parameters" or Indeed "Stop Words"of New Super Safe Big Brother UK Web..

all the companys that i have spoken to are not bothered about the .UK and they wont be bothering with securing the .UK extension if this happens

I can see this changing rapidly and they will want to secure the same name they have.

If I owned footballkit.co.uk and did not reg the .UK i would be mighty pissed when I see a site on it using feeds and selling the same gear. The new .uk owner just has to be patient, sit back and wait for the leakage to go the other way. (which it will) They don't need to sell a lot to recoup their £20 a year.

No one likes change but this change will be the ultimate game changer. We are all old school. Wait 10yrs and there will be no difference in the next generations eyes between uk.com. gb.com, uk.net, co.uk, gb.net, org.uk, me.uk

I think anyone in business that does not try to secure their .UK name will be committing (in part) long term commercial suicide. I know I will be trying to secure mine and Nominet know this.

I don't think it will matter how many millions you have spent on your co.uk branding, you will still want the .UK as co.uk will pale and merge with the rest of the "sub extentions" in years to come.

What a coup for Nominet if they get away with it. Bottom line is, it is about receiving £20 per annum instead of £2.50. (800% rise)

Maybe for some, now is the time to take a £200 punt, pick a nice generic off of candle boy's list and trademark it under a different classification. If it comes down to submitting who has the best rights to the .uk name i would think you would have a stronger case as you can show candle boy in "bad light" as his intentions become obvious when you submit the whole list of prime generics to Nominet. In fact, I would hope it will make their trademarks look absurd and done in truly bad faith.

The implications for this .UK proposed launch haven't sunk home by a LONG-LONG way YET!

Candleboy will find-out soon enough - just how "sound-bite" conscious the UK Govenment (and its agencies are). 10 years ago(possibly even 5 ) the ruse would have probably worked - Not a chance that particular ploy will work today..

Spot on. But I guess they are redundant. And quite honestly they don't have the mindshare that .co.uk has.
In gTLDs we have seen that TLDs that involve red tape/vetting/restrictions etc are not popular. Examples: .jobs .coop .pro (in the past) etc.
I don't think the average consumer has any clue that .ltd.uk and .plc.uk are more tightly regulated therefore more trustworthy. So there isn't any tangible benefit in practice, anyway that's what I'm guessing.

You would still have to pay for the new .uk even if you didn't use it, so as to protect your brand.
Someone with say 40 domains including varyants would have to find £800.
Extortion is putting it politely.

I have some good org.uk''s but there would be no argument whatsoever for the org.uk owner being anywhere in the pecking order. Org.uk is sold for non profit and the new.uk would be for business.
