.UK Announced

Are the membership able to appoint someone to perform a truly independent review or is this the point at which we realise that we've given the board too much autonomy?

I don't think that is possible to be honest. With regards powers, nope Nominet members can remove board members still. I'm trying top stay away from going down that road but more and more members are requesting that is the focal point of any EGM. I personally think that could put a lot of members off and re-open old wounds.

That has it's down fall to, bringing in the Government could be one outcome of that but one has to assume that if the Government was in charge they could not get away with proposing this.

Funny enough, playing around before my cornflakes this morning

Took the domain "dotUK.org" seeing it was sitting there all alone amongst all the unavailables. Let me know if I can point it at your page greywing or alternatively change the nameservers to make your site resolve

If I had more clout I would get more involved. As a website owner (foremost)I am 100% against this idea. Surely the VAST majority of website owners would be too. Even if they do get the .UK version of their name, it will either lay around dormant ( a waste of money, but a necessary one) or they will incur costs for moving sites over to the new domains and for setting up redirects (average Joe) that they would rather do without. What exactly is wrong with what we have now?!!

This needs to be publicised much more so that Joe knows the effect this is going to have on his business - have we considered PR? Im thinking newspaper spreads, etc etc..... Im sure there are enough people to get a pretty hefty awareness advertising??? budget together.

Don't know if this has already been referenced but the overall trend may have been worrying for Nominet

Good spot - those sort of stats were the reason why I posted this http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/nomin...uk-registered-names-about-reach-its-peak.html

If you sign up to Nominet's Business Intelligence reports you get a good idea of what might be going on. Renewal rates have dropped pretty dramatically in recent months and is now a much bigger influence on the amount of domains registered.

Interesting that back in August few agreed that the Register would decrease in size.

money.co.uk is a great example

I've only just appreciated how many generic word trademarks are out there. The proposal is farcical as it stands.

The money.co.uk people appear to lack a trademark, but there are 10 'money' trademarks, including one for the Virgin Islands cheats. Most haven't anything to do with money, they are for clothing, perfume etc.

If the drop in numbers to .uk are true then it's probably more a sign of Google's changes to the way resellers make money through parking and mini sites.

In my opinion this probably shows more about how some portfolio owners (myself included) who buy junk domains that nobody else would probably ever want and continue to pay renewal fees on. So after changes from Google etc, decided to drop.

The drops are no reflection or say nothing about Nominet in my opinion, maybe this scheme is a sign of panic.

That was at the back of my mind.

I remember the conference in London a few years ago, 2007/8 I think - I even met a few of you reprobates there! - where Lesley gave a talk where she said that ~6-10% of domains are in portfolio holders hands. The largest being about 35000ish. I'm certain that's either still the case or higher now.

That must weigh in there as a factor in a lot of equations...

I always heard the staff get paid well, they go on lavish away days and generally they make more money than they know what to do with.

No wonder the staff are generally v nice!

Certain staff are paid well, plus bonuses in dismissal years! :p

And we're still paying £10 for a domain transfer which was supposedly meant to be reviewed when the cost of developing the system had been recovered!!!
Grant

Confused, why don't they use that £6m for DNSSEC for .co.uk's

Will be interesting to see the figures coming out during the consultation period. Some culling of holdings will be taking place. I have a lot of "average" that will go regardless of direct.uk or not. A wake up call for me of just how vulnerable the .uk structure is to any possible changes.

.co.uk will still be desirable. I would think it would be for business to still secure .co.uk, .uk and com. direct.uk in its current proposed form has a number of barriers to register and activate the domain. These barriers may impede the uptake and acceptance of .uk.

Regarding the decline... Surely the number of registrations must have fallen off the cliff now they've announced the .uk? I know I've stopped buying, and coupled with the EMD update, lots of domains will go! For me, it's .com from here on thanks to the uncertainty of it all.

I agree. Will be a long time before they are celebrating 10 million names registered again.
