Just out of interest, is there any actual good reason why nominet are not planning to give existing .co.uk owners first opportunity to buy the equivalent .uk domain?

Also, if domainers are thinking this whole .uk domain thing is a bad idea, then busines owners and everyone else who owns .co.uk domains are going to think its a REALLY bad idea. Domainers stand to loose a lot less than business owners if the proposals go ahead.

Also, if domainers are thinking this whole .uk domain thing is a bad idea, then busines owners and everyone else who owns .co.uk domains are going to think its a REALLY bad idea. Domainers stand to loose a lot less than business owners if the proposals go ahead.

If it is only the first opportunity rather than paired ownership, you will still end up with a mixed situation, as even with the internet, facbook the media and Nominet's best efforts not all registrants will understand or even be aware of the situation and its ramifications if they dont take it up. So although a smaller confusion problem will arise with what you suggest, than the current proposal, you would still end up with confusion of ownership of the 2 competing domains on maybe 100,000's of domains plus still lots of cybersquatting on genuine businesses, that do not take up the .uk in the time window you are suggesting.

Nominet is also yet to provide a clear view of the differences between .co.uk and .uk (as they can do with other 3 level domains such as .org.uk) especially if the security is unbundled, so as not to downgrade existing domains.

ive just spoke to nominet about this. i have asked if i can pre register the .uk domain name of my .co.uk. the name said a decision will be made in January and that the .co.uk owners will get first dibs on the .uk. thats great for me, and most other businesses. the rest can be sold and fought over as usual. so if they do that across the board for all 2.3 4 etc names there shouldn't be to much issue apart from raising MILLIONS!

I spoke to a man with a stutter over the phone...land line aswell, no Skype for me! as i said, nothing in writing nothing set in stone. But an insight into how staff feel about it maybe or even a little bit of a heads up.

Why wouldn't they offer it out to .co.uks first? And who cares about the millions of domain cybersquatters etc...only you lot. to most this isn't a problem and speaking with someone HIGH up at a very big steel firm today they won't be chaning there marketing!

It has clearly been done to raise revenue and to bee seen to be tightening up of internet security etc. someones gonna get knighted....someones not going to get there .uk domain...some will

Thats a very good point, we all know .co.uk domains are the main uk domains and are the preferred choice for businesses, and that .org.uk's are for organisations etc.....

Therefore what is the new .uk domain extension for? Does it have a defined purpose? Is it to replace .co.uk domains for businesses? Nominet need to make this clear, otherwise it is going to add even more confusion to an already crowded and confused market.

Thanks for the clarification.

The steel firm may not feel its worth changing their marketing as it would cost a lot. But when somebody else gets their .uk domain as they don't see the point and the owner of that .uk (potentially) intecepts say 1% of their intended confidential emails, when the .uk domain becomes established, I wonder if they would then take more notice?
Maybe they will be held ransom to get the domain into their ownership?

1st January – 30th June 2013 – Funding will only be agreed for marketing activity that focuses exclusively on .UK domains and is completed between these dates.

So we might see adverts for .uk domains from 1st January?

The communique from Nominet's October board meeting has been published at http://www.nominet.org.uk/news/latest/october-board-communiqué and includes this paragraph :

The Board noted the recent launch of the direct .uk consultation and, as expected, the significant level of interest generated. The Board supported the Executive’s plans to engage fully with the widest possible set of stakeholders during the consultation period, including appropriate outreach across all regions of the United Kingdom. The Board fully recognised the significance of the proposal, and the need to ensure that all implications both of the concept of second level registrations and each of the constituent elements of the direct.uk proposal were fully understood prior to making any decision.

I think having such phrases in the Nominet Board's own formal record at this point in the process is good news as it would mean any subsequent shortcoming by either the Board or the Executive in the rigour of either their consultation process or their decision making process would implicitly suggest a breach of corporate governance.

I think that probably refers to the .uk family (.co.uk, .org.uk, etc) rather than the proposed .uk domains.

Your probably right, but on reading it again, it still stated .UK 10 times no mention of .co.uk! But why spend nominet money marketing .co.uk is there is a chance the registrant might not get the superior .uk version of the domain?

Let's say this proposal is given the go ahead. If I understand correctly, the security features will mean that you won't be able to just register a domain. You'll need to apply, submit documentation and be vetted before either receiving approval or being denied.

Has anyone at Nominet considered how much work is involved if there are Millions of applicants?

Another example by Nominet of a not thought out plan, never mind how much of a time delay would be created and cost of postage etc it would take.

1 million applicants at 5 minutes per application = 83333 hours / 2083 weeks (at 40 hours a week) worth of work.

As I'm sure Nominet will be working on a cost recovery basis the £20m income would employ 8097 people at minimum wage and the work would be completed in just over 10 hours

Or better still they could just lock Lesley in the board room with the applications for 2083 weeks and let her deal with the mess!
