Nomensa report, graph on p14. By eyeballing it, looks like an 80%+ ratio against the proposal rather than for it on the all-important question 11a/11b i.e. the "Should the whole thing go ahead?" section. To my mind, that makes all the other sections/responses/graphs completely irrelevant, like debating which murder weapon to use when the decision's been made not to kill anyone in the first place.

Thanks to you Websaway, the rest of the people who posted here that made the aurguments, Edwins outstanding contributions and all the others that have not posted on the forum but completed the Nominet .uk consultation, as it looks from the analysis a lot of domainers here did fill it in rather just accept the Nominet steam roller.

I think domainers here have made a real difference to the cause and future of the UK namespace for the good of all.

I know the battle is not over but it least it is not lost!

Wow, from the Nomensa report (pages 5-6)

Important caveat #1: Question 11a was confusing and
potentially misinterpreted by respondents

11a. Do you agree that Nominet should consider the provision of
a more secure .uk domain name service with registrations directly
at the second level?

This question was potentially confusing to respondents. Due to
the complex nature of the direct.uk proposal, this question was
asked after all the specific features had been explained.
However, the answer “Yes, as we have outlined above” could
have been misinterpreted by many as “Yes, but with the
changes that I have outlined above in response to the other
questions”. Exemplifying this, in the comments for 11a and
11b, 41 respondents expressed concern or disagreement with
the direct.uk proposal, even though they answered “Yes, as we
have outlined above” to 11a.

The question also contains two aspects: (a) a more secure .uk
domain name service, and (b) registrations directly at the
second level. For example, respondents who, agreed with the
principles of (a), but under no circumstances (b), the multiple
choice answers available may not have fulfilled their needs.

Given these potentially confusing factors, it is recommended
that Nominet do not place too much weight on the data
produced by this question, and instead look at the overall
positive vs. negative responses to each individual
feature/question.

In other words, they've pulled the fangs of the single most important question in the whole consultation, the one place that people had the opportunity to say "NO" to the whole sorry mess.

There will be a lot of reading ahead, and a huge number of "findings" to come out of this, I'm sure, but it's important not to lose sight of the above...

What a complete Nominet white wash, as a lot of us said at the time when we filled out the form, the very first question on the form should have been a simple:

1) Do you want direct.UK

A) Yes
B) No

There would be no confusion with that whatsoever, but they choose to word it all confusingly, then decide to give no weight to the answers of that question, how convenient. It looks more and more like Nominet is being run by the characters from one flew over the cuckoos nest, no prizes for guessing who's playing Jack Nicholsons part.

I'm sure a lot of thought went into their response but in agreement with you I find this sentence insulting to current co.uk holders who have given the introduction of .uk a resounding NO


Should the new shorter .uk suffix be introduced, Nominet has committed to continuing to support the existing third level domains (e.g .co.uk).

From the Nominet Secretariat summary, page 11:

In general, there is not a clear consensus of unreserved support amongst stakeholders for the
direct.uk proposals as they currently stand. Many stakeholders liked some but not all aspects of the
proposal (eg security features), whilst a small proportion of stakeholders declared that they were
fundamentally opposed to the concept of the direct.uk proposition which enabled registrations at the
second level whether it included additional security features or not.

Which is as diametrically opposed from my reading of the situation as it's possible to be. There was a massive, overwhelming swing against the whole idea at the face-to-face sessions, and Nomensa's own data shows 80%+ negative response (when a preference was expressed).

Brilliant example of how, if you collect enough answers to something, you have the jigsaw puzzle pieces you need to make up anything you like.

From the Secretariat whitewash document (p39):

A consistent theme amongst a significant number of respondents, particularly amongst non-technical registrants, was the assumption that a UK presence is already required to register in .co.uk
or .org.uk.

For my money, submissions from anyone who, by their answers to certain consultation questions, made it blatantly obvious that they don't have a clue about what they're talking about (to put it politely) should immediately be disregarded in toto, from first question to last. Nomensa made some mention about this in their intro as well, though without actually doing anything about the issue in their later analysis.

This was prevalent in the face-to-face discussions about security, for example, where it was clear as daylight to listeners with IT security backgrounds that some speakers were talking out of their proverbial, yet their feedback was noted just as diligently as that from people with the requisite experience, who unanimously declared the security aspects to be inadequate, full of holes, and direct.uk likely to generate MORE rather than fewer security risks.

Like asking Creationists and scientists to explain how the Earth got here, then presenting an "average" of their views ("Well, it's probably at least a million years old, right?")

BTW, it's important not to lose sight of the fact that the documents presented to the Board continue to brush under the carpet the whole "should we/shouldn't we?" issue, which should be addressed FIRST ahead of ANY specifics.

No, I would rather they came to a different conclusion.

I agree with below it will be much more time for domainers, the press/media will see this as a non-story. End users in not knowing (99%) will not be concerned.

NOTE: Nominet have not yet issued a press release via their website on this news only a news item.

The question is whether when the dust settles from today, that a votable question be added to the AGM about .uk or whether calling an EGM would be so much more effective and quicker?

The Secretariat couldn't resist the chance of a dig at domainers. Really, if you get the itch, sit on your hands until it goes away, guys! It's not productive...

From their summary document, page 58:

A small number of stakeholders, notably those active in the secondary market or registrants who
had purchased their domain from the secondary market and thus invested significant financial
resources in their domain name(s), were especially of the view that existing registrants should be
given an “automatic right” to the matching direct.uk domain so as not to undermine their initial
investment. This group of respondents advanced the view that this should be the only way the
service is implemented, as any other process could be inequitable.
