The email normally arrives straight away.
What I meant is usually you get a link to set up a nominet account when buying .co.uk to setup a signature and all that. spoke to the guy who was on that article about domains who owns kids.co.uk over the phone and he said there was no need as 123Reg was the registrar on behalf of nominet i am confused

You have to be a TAG holder at Nominet to register a UK domain.
You can set yourself up as a TAG holder (if you have £600 spare) to register domains or go through a domain registeration company (such as 123-reg), who will do it for you.
The important part is putting the domain in your name, not who actually orders it from Nominet.
