.UK stabbed in back by own CEO

Nominet are desperate to "diversify" (for that, read "go into all kinds of high-risk, high-reward new markets") and the CEO seems to have been brought in as part of that strategy.

As such, he's taking the corporate line that the UK namespace is somehow under threat and that provides the logical justification for this diversification drive. All nonsense, of course - but "useful" nonsense.

If you want to see just how badly the new GTLD are doing, check out the renewal rates of the ones coming up to their first anniversary. Not pretty...

Part of .uk's failure to date is that Nominet have taken their eye off the ball with the drive to diversify. When this happens, failure is self-fulfilling.

The diversification drive is also partly the result of a not for profit with far too much money on its hands. £12 to transfer a domain name is a ridiculous sum to still be charging when it is completed online.

I agree that £12 seems a lot for something automated. But to focus on that is to focus on the wrong battle - I don't imagine that Nominet get more than 1-2% of their revenue from transfer fees. The big money is in registrations and renewals...

Indeed Edwin, I was silly enough to buy around a dozen new gtld, am renewing one only. Who the hell would renew .luxury domains for a grand a year except an idiot or people with too much money? Unless they have built a site on it, to sit on it from a domainers point of view, you've got to be mad....

Agreed, but the transfer fee is the most obvious example of Nominet getting money for doing virtually nothing that is then squandered on what look like a series of grand follies.

Pity the poor folk at Nominet who's ambitions may be far out of kilter with the original purpose of the company, which is simply to manage the .uk name space. Maybe it drives some of them nuts dealing with boring old .uk domain names. Oh to be out there involved in all sorts of more interesting and important stuff, interacting with government, the security services, etc, and generally making themselves heard wherever someone will listen to them. Why don't they just change their name and jump into bed with Icann:

As 'members' can't we get this bloke removed in favour of some who is actually interested and understands domains?

Looks like Thornton has gone into the clouds since he's been elected (pin drop). If I'd been elected I would be all over this like a rash trying to dismantle this farcical board.. ohh David is anybody out there... :D
