Quite a nice little idea.

The thing that instantly comes to mind if I was doing it would be to register a domain name like....

askthe.co.uk

and then simply use for example....

askthe.co.uk/plumber
askthe.co.uk/lawyer
askthe.co.uk/florist

I think then it would be alot easier to expand and more simple to operate the site. Plus you also have one main short URL site which you could make a nice brand for.

thanks for the replies, but i was hoping to get an idea of what these might be worth - the sites are already up and running (have been for a few years) and get somewhere between 8000 to 250,000 hits per day (depending on which site it is)

what about some of the others....like forumboards.co.uk, energyuser.co.uk ??

thanks again

How many unique users rather than hits?

As domains, anyone's guess, you know the worth, 250,000 page views a day or hits? take annual revenue and multiply by four and you'll have an idea. I sell traffic domains at four years, sounds like you're selling a business.

forumboards... same thing twice.

energyuser... nice site but nothing on it.

I saw a website when looking for a boiler and tradesman that worked along the lines of your one, it was based on local search and opinion. Revenue x four. If you want to get the best out of your project or need some ideas, pm me. If you have a price for selling, let me know.

Cheers

First off, I would ditch the phpBB and get your master site sorted with vBulletin and vBSEO so you can rewrite URLs for the SEs. You only need to use one copy of vB, and then title the forums according to the other site names, and then point those domains back to the forum URLs. As Mat suggested, you could have done this with subdirectories (or subdomaining) but in my view you need to make hay with your 250,000 hits, as long as the uniques are worth the appx. £150 you'd need to spend on the software.

thanks for the feedback...

as for the askthequestion series, the intention was (and still is) to have a dedicated site for each trade. This would add to the overall search engine positioning whilst providing specific information for that trade - links, adverts etc. We are considering the series for sale which is why i posted in the first place, to get an idea of value (because we have no idea).

not really understanding the 'hits' thing, here are the stats for askthequestion.co.uk:

Total Hits: 290637
Total Files: 202883
Total Pages: 89252
Total Visits: 17084
Total KBytes: 2620133

Total Unique Sites: 7188
Total Unique URLs: 8382
Total Unique Referrers: 2078

however, as this is a forum (like this site) surely the number of unique visits would be less as regular users return for more info ???!??

the sites don't generate huge revenue, but the cost of the domains and webspace is paid for from adsense and 1 company advertising on the forums.

not really sure what
forumboards... same thing twice
means, as i was trying to get an idea for the value of the domain

same goes for energyuser.co.uk

many thanks for your replies though, greatly appreciated.

oh, and any thoughts on the linton sites as we've been approached for a value to sell (again we've no idea)

When valuing these as traffic domains you only need refer to, 'Total Visits' which is 'unique visitors'. Hits / page views etc may seem like nice high stats to use but from a valuing point of view are worthless figures.
