Oh, and the original video seems to have been a hoax as the company shut up shop several years ago, and their domain has been taken over by someone selling an ebook with very dubious claims.

I'm not sure what happened there then. I was on Reuters and clicked on the vid link that stated:

Well, some split water using an external power source (net energy input required) then store the hydrogen/oxygen thus produced, which combine to become water vapour and heat (ie energy which can be used to drive the engine)

What was suggested in the video is a solution that replaces that external power source with "magic", thus creating a system that produces energy from nothing. In other words, a potential perpetual motion machine, which is exactly as daft as it sounds...

I remember reading an interesting story about a man who invented a much more efficient way of splitting H/O, could be retrofitted to existing cars to make them run on hydrogen instead of petrol. First he got bullied by big oil companies, then he was mysteriously murdered. It does make you wonder whats really going on.

Stanley Meyer was a media storm back in the 90's with his water powered car. He claimed to have a closed system, i.e. water in and motion out, which is obviously very impressive. I remember studying these video's and claims many years ago and are very very fascinating and to the observer can appear quite genuine. However some issues did arise with repeat-ability of his claims despite being awarded a number of patents.

Any innovation centres around the effective electrolysis of water which currently requires quite a lot of energy to achieve. There is no evidence that I have found to show that these claims were ever backed up by data showing much greater efficiency for the method he proposed (using high voltage and high frequency, if I remember correctly) to get at the H2. I'm not saying he didn't do it, but if one could liberate H2 more effectively it would save $trillions a year and I expect many groups/companies/bodies would look at his work and try and copy it or take his findings and work to innovate around this.

There are an awful lot of eyes looking at this and the fact that his technique has not come out in 20 years since he started being shown in the media is a mystery indeed.

Actually I'd love to believe what this guy said, but the way he talks about the innovation in such a jingoistic makes me very suspicious.

That said, I suspect there are some pretty cool "black" energy projects that the US government works on and that simply wont ever see the light of day. And I do like to keep an open and curious mind, because physics fact is often stranger than fiction.
