Ok, hard to explain, .co.uk owner since 2005 (expires in 2017) registered the .uk in 2014, which subsequently expired and was due to drop today. Have been chasing it, then noticed my system stopped. Checked the whois and the .uk is now showing the domain back in the 'right of registration' status, since 20:30 this evening.

How is that even possible? Why would a registered .uk (not right of...) suddenly return to that status; Nominet don't allow it, and certainly not at this late stage in the day.

An error. Have you definitely eliminated any spelling error on your part (e.g. plural or typo)? If so, report it to Nominet by email.
No error on my part, had the whois left open, refreshed and it was like that (with the correct timestamp). Checked my logs and it stated "V334 Your request for domain 'domain' has failed because the 'account-name' for the registrant does not fully match any registrant which has rights for this domain". Checked 6 minutes later and the domain was FTR. Very odd!

It went from registered, to right of registration, to free to register, all in the space of about 6 minutes. Never seen anything like it. I'll report to Nom.
