I was thinking for a while about where to post this because it is not really about valuation, search or simply selling a domain. It is more about what we can actually build around domain names.
One question someone in the domain industry asked me stayed in my head:
How do you want to help domainers?
That question became part of what we are building with Constellation Domain.
The idea is quite simple, instead of showing only a domain name and a price, we try to bring the domain to life. What could this name actually become? What business could live behind it? How could it make money? What would the brand feel like?
One example we are currently building is DNoff.com.
The idea behind DNoff is “off-radar”. Instead of looking only at what is already trending in tech, the platform could collect signals from many different places, new projects, hackathons, magazines, startups, research, agriculture and other industries. The interesting part for domain investors is trying to see a trend before it becomes an obvious trend.
Imagine seeing that a certain technology, product category or terminology starts appearing across several independent sources before everybody is talking about it. That information could become another signal when researching what domains might become interesting. DNoff itself could then become a real product, free discovery, premium alerts, followed projects, trend notifications, deeper data and so on.
And that is the part I find interesting.
You are no longer looking only at DNoff.com as a domain. You are looking at a possible business built around DNoff.com.
This is one direction of what we call brandability at Constellation Domain.
We are experimenting with other things too, brand protection intelligence, company and trademark research, domain use cases, acquisition opportunities and valuation/data tools. For valuation, our direction is actually to move away from pretending there is one exact magic price and instead work toward useful ranges backed by more data. Sometimes the use case can be much simpler too.
A great domain can almost be worn like a business card. Put a strong .com on the back of a shirt and people will type it into their browser. The domain itself becomes part of the identity.
We have a domain market as well, but the bigger experiment for us is, How much further can we take a domain than a normal “For Sale” page?
DNoff is only one example and it is still being built. Some of our other modules are early as well. We are building openly, testing ideas and are very open to collaboration with other people in the domain industry.
Would be interesting to hear from domain investors here, Would off-radar trend signals actually be useful when you research future domain acquisitions? And what would you want such a tool to show you?
