What would happen to your domain names if you died?

Yes that is correct. 100 domains, lots of hassle, perhaps money coming in in dribs and drabs. Seems like a lot of trouble to give someone for very little reward.

£100,000 life insurance for circa £20 a month, let the domains go is my opinion.

I assume you are a drop catcher ;)

One of the key things, if you have a large portfolio, is to do the triage beforehand. You have the expertise to decide which are the most valuable names and which are marginal contributors, whereas given the context of this thread your next of kin do not. It's the 80/20 rule - make it clear which 20% (or whatever) of names need to be renewed to preserve 80% of the value. If you have a clear list saying "renew these, don't worry about those" then that's something simple to work to.

As has already been mentioned, if you can afford it then extend the registration of the diamonds in your portfolio for the full 10 years and maintain that 10 year cushion going forwards. A decade is a long time to "get educated" if there is substantial value in what is being passed on.

On a similar note, life insurance also "buys time" for the inheritor of the assets to learn the trade (assuming the names have substantial value - not talking a few £thousand here, because as has been noted that can be eclipsed by 1-2 orders of magnitude by the payout from the insurance)

It should also go without saying (but perhaps worth doing so anyway) that if domains are a "hobby" that brings in a "bit of spare cash" each month, then probably the last thing you want to inflict on the newly bereaved is a sudden pressing need to understand the complexities of the domain system for such a marginal gain. A simple "don't worry about them - just forget the whole domain thing" would be a much nicer, neater, simpler way of dealing with the issue in that case.
