I'm after a new phone which can browse well, receive and send emails (Pref pushed to my phone) a good camera.

I have had a N95 and HTC phones and both not bad (N95 prone to breaking on me though)

My short list
  • Samsung Tocco (F480)
  • HTC Touch pro (launching soon)
  • HTC Touch Diamond
  • N96

Any others and comments welcome.

Got the N96. Good solid phone. Like the N95.
Similar to the N95 but just has a 16gb internal memory as well as a memory card slot for expandible memory.

Camera is slightly tweaked for better capture as is the video camera, but that's about all the changes. Comes with some added little functions like auto rotate depending on which way you hold the phone (i.e for when watching movies etc).

Nice colour and design (rounded corners like an iphone).
Slightly slower when switching between application than the original N95, but all in all a very good phone.

Looked at the Toccco (F480) and Omnia (i900) and for me the Omnia is the Tocco's bigger brother so wouldn't sell yourself short on that score.
Although I thought the web browser on both the Tocco and Omnia left a lot to be desired.

N95 latest firmware does auto rotate - worth keeping it upto date as they put a new one up every few months. The tv tuner in the n96 doesnt work in the uk so thats a bit rubbish and the new version of the n82 has fm broadcast and the flagship doesnt - wierd.

Miles of difference between the n95 and the 8gig version, so make sure you get the right one. One big downside to me is the n95's dont hold lots (ie. 4000) images very well as it slows opening the gallery up by miles.

As handsets become more and more similar the question is what do you want the new handset to do that the current doesnt? :)

No Rob I just want a phone that works at the minute. ;) Using one of my old ones out of the drawer for now.

Just had another N95 fail on me (dropped and bounced it as I got out my car) and wondered what's out there now as it's another year gone by and due another in a few weeks.

Internet, email and a good camera are the main really.

But I do like all the apps you can get for your phones now, had loads on the N95's I had.

The Omnia i900 and HTC Touch pro look the most interesting and all the other seem on par with each other nearly anyways, so it's a hard one.

n95 8 gig / n96 as basically the same phone, n82's are decent candybar style versions of the n95 but with benefit of seemingly quicker GPS and lense cover on the camera.

My HTC Touch Pro arrives today from Expansys. Thus I have a Nokia E90 Communicator; an MWg Atom LIfe, and an HTC P3600 Trinity for sale -- all going cheap before I have to mess about with eBay. Please PM only.

I agree with that.
Personally if you want internet, email and text/calls with a semi alright camera then get the iphone. My brother in law has one and they're solid on that front. Nothing will beat the internet on the iphone.

If you want camera/video camera quality with added S60 firmware bonus of being able to load your own apps then the N96 wont leave you upset.
I don't use the phone for email so couldn't comment on that, and the browser is alright (better than Tocco/Omnia) but I still wouldn't say it's anywhere close to the iphone.

That's true. I have an iPhone 3G (locked to AT&T from USA) and it's perfect for internet - just waiting for the SIM unlock crack to come out so that I can put my Voda SIM in it. Actually the iPhone camera is more than adequate also.

Dude the camera is w*** and you know it ;)
For a modern phone, with no video camera, picture message facility and only a 2mp camera, it ought to be ashamed of itself.

However for email and internet browsing is seriously kicks arse! :D

Agreed - its annoying as its the usual apple drip feed. Last time the 3G was 'not needed' now its the main reason for upgrade... next time will be better camera etc :(

Shame they wont just make a total wonder-handset and be done with it.

I've got a 3G iphone, and love it. It was a life saver last week when i was down in London town for a meeting with a posh client. Over lunch, we were discussing some new site ideas, so I loaded up a few examples, so they could see.

I've used the internet on phones for years, and nothing has even come close to what this can handle.

The camera is pretty bad - but it's never been marketed as a camera, whereas the SE ones are etc.

Battery life on the iPhone isn't that great though. With 3G and wifi on all day, you'll need to charge it daily. However, seeing that you wouldn't expect a laptop to last all day with wifi enabled etc, I don't think it's *that* bad.

Jee

Dale I use a Rebel sim card with my AT&T locked 3g iphone and unlocks it fine with all UK networks.

Rebel SimCard - Unlock iPhone 3G - Unlock all versions inc v2.1

The sim card is £10 and you just need a standard paper hole punch to cut a hole in your sim card.

HTC Touch pro

aZooZa is the HTC Touch Pro.......is it released today? :p

Wanted a play with it in store to get a better idea.

Thanks for that Chris. Do you get a decent signal? Simon tried that option with his and had a hell of a job getting the SIM out again, and found the signal terrible :(

Signals no worse then my sisters UK spec Iphone, I think the bar is not very acurate even on 0 signal its just as good as full signal. I havent done the latest 2.X upgrade yet but I think that addresses that. Although Ive heard they just changed it so it shows higher signal regardless :(

Ive got the knack of getting the card in and out. You kind of have to bend it at the top middle a little and pops in and out fine ;)

Thanks again Chris - will have a go at that. Touch Pro just arrived and is charging -- much smaller than I thought and weighs about the same as the E90.
