why does cartoonstock.com come up so often in google?

I am always surprised. It looks like some script, they are often half way down the first page on really weird google searches.

I kept seeing them when I was seaching dictionary .co.uk's and I just saw them again when I searched 'BreakRoom'

6th in the list here

The info under the search result shows:

"Break Room cartoons from the CartoonStock directory - the world's largest on-line collection of cartoons."

For the other searches I've seen them by, the term I search replaces the bit in bold in the description above. Even if it's an obscure search term.

Curious...

1. Lots of good quality content. (100 000 Cartoons)
2. Lots of people elsewhere on the web linking to that content.
3. Lots of webpages - on average about 10 pages per cartoon, through associating each cartoon with lots of keywords and generating a page for each keyword. This tagging of the cartoons is key to their success they appear to be really good at it, perhaps suggesting they have automation to assist.
4. Good SEO - keywords in the URL - and even in the script file name eg. "break_room.asp"
5. Hosted on a UK server United Kingdom Northampton - so ranking well for a Google UK search.
6. Site restructured in October 2007, perhaps still benefiting from some bonus for fresh new content.

It's a genuine business, with lots of genuine good original unique content.

This has really opened my eyes. Thanks MishMash.

I really underestimated their content. I think they've seriously gone after the long tail in seo, I've gone back to some of the obscure dictionary words that they popped up for in google. They have a bunch of page titles with the odd words in there.

Really good case study.
