YOU’D have to be a hell of a motorist to get your car in this space.

But that’s what the dozy workers who painted this new disabled parking bay expected of mum Rebecca Fairchild.

And to make matters worse, Rebecca, 38 – whose five-year-old son Joshua suffers from autism – had been waiting eight months for the council to give her the space.

She said: “I started asking for this last June. I don’t know why it took so long.

“I kept phoning and phoning but the only explanation I got was, ‘It’s because of the weather’. Then I came home from school and saw this. I thought it was some kind of a joke. I just couldn’t believe somebody could do that. But when I realised it was there to stay I wasn’t laughing.”

Full-time mum Rebecca, who also has a nine-year-old daughter, Sophie, said the workers just ignored the lamppost outside her home in Saffron Walden, Essex.

She said: “They sent us the plans and there was no lamppost but they ignored what was in front of their eyes and followed the plans to the letter.

“I found it very upsetting because Joshua has been ill recently. I burst into tears. The road is very busy and I can’t leave Joshua by himself by traffic. ”

Her builder husband Colin, 47, said: “We have had lots of people coming past, taking pictures of it and laughing. They think it’s some kind of joke.”

An Essex County Council spokesperson said: “We take any poor performance very seriously and are working with contractors to repaint this disabled bay in an appropriate location and ensure this does not happen again in the future. This cost is being met by the contractor.”

Council contractors May Gurney, which painted the bay while the Fairchild family were out, has apologised and yesterday blacked over the space.

A spokesman for the firm said last night: “May Gurney is sorry for the confusion that has led to this disabled bay being inappropriately located and we will be moving it as quickly as possible.’’

it just looks wrong in so many ways ,the typeface looks freehand ,width length... which is unlike the council ,disgruntled employee of the contractor maybe....shameful

They have even painted over the shadow of the lamp post, disgraceful!

When would they ever put a disabled box on a path, never!

When would they ever put a disabled box on a path, never!

Quite often in some of the housing estates around here (well more leeds area). The paths are wide and cars are expected to park on them out of the carriageway.

Though this does look a little fishy all the same...
