Does anyone know of a good WP ptoto album plugin, something which will basically turn a WP site in to a photograph gallery, anything like that exist, or are they just plugins for inserting images in to posts, also needs the ability for people to upload their photos as well.

you'd need a photo theme rather than plug-in, take a look at the theme Gallery where each photo is a post. Gallery looks really good but needs exact sized thumbnails and main images uploaded each time which could mean tidying up if you're not the poster.

Not sure about users uploading their own photos on WP, I think that would mean giving them posting rights.

I use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/ on a few sites.

You can resize all images within a gallery at the touch of a button, so you can just upload a lot of pictures and then resize to say 600 x 600 for easy viewing and it will resize whilst keeping aspects.

Haven't done it but I think you can set it up so that others (eg contributors) can add images.

Hi Binny,

Yes, you're right, I was having a look round and found some photo gallery themes, as opposed to gallery plugins, just thought there may have been something I'd missed that allowed a WP gallery plugin for people to be able to upload their images to it as well, cheers.

I like StudioPress themes, I have the Church and Lifestyle themes, but nothing really useful for a photo gallery site on there, they are more photo blog sites, I need something more gallery orientated.

Just spotted a follower on Twitter who has a theme from this site, some nice themes on there for photography including some free: http://graphpaperpress.com/

Free themes listed here with the paid ones: http://graphpaperpress.com/compare/

[edit]

Just tried to download the Mansion theme, go to register and get an error after clicking submit saying "This field is required", but all the fields are correctly filled out, pain in the arse grrrrr

[edit]

Thanks to Malcolm for the PM asking if I ticked the little box at the top next to "freebies" at the top, no I didn't, only saw the theme heading and not the round check box, cheers.

Great, it now lets me register after ticking the box, but then at the top of the thmese it says this:

Important: Never use WordPress' built in theme upload tool. Always upload themes using FTP.

What a waste of fecking time, twats, can't use that then if it's not automated upload

Bit harsh aint it?
They provide a great theme for free, but you cant use FTP (which is incredibly easy), and they are the twats?

If you want some help setting up an FTP client I would be happy to help.

Probably, just annoyed they don't tell you that before the hassle of registering on the site after trying numerous times to register with errors. Thanks for the offer again Jim, but I wouldn't use FTP, I don't like anything techy to download like that, I'm looking to buy a normal premium theme with one click install via Wp control panel.

Whos your hosting with again I'd be amazed if they dont have a web based ftp client

I'm with HostGator, but even if they have a web based FTP, I'm still none the wiser how to install WP from uploading files, has to be one click WP install or nothing.

You don't have to install wp manually mate just upload the themes folder to wp-content/themes/ directory via the web ftp
Theres a guide that explains it in a bit more detail here

Thanks, it might look easy if you know what you were doing, I hate control panels, can't find anything in them, don't know what any of the stuff does, all I am used to doing is uploading 1 html page file at a time, that link says:

#1- Download a theme you like. It doesn’t matter if it’s a free WordPress theme or if you paid for it, just make sure that you download it to a folder that you can easily find later. Tip: I make a new folder for Wordpress, and then a folder inside that labeled “themes”.

#2- Open your HostGator CPanel and sign in. There should be a link provided in your welcome email.

#3- Open “File Manager”. It should be the second from the left on the second line. The icon has a kind of landscape look to it.

#4- Open the folder marked “www”. The folder should be just above the file marked “create new file”.

#5- Click on the folder marked “wp-content” if you’re installing the WordPress theme on your main domain. If you’re installing the theme on a secondary domain, open the folder for that domain first and then open the wp-content folder.

#6- Open the folder marked “themes”.

#7- Click on “upload file(s)”. It’s marked with a big arrow pointing upwards.

#8- Use the browse button to find the theme download. Click upload.

#9- Click on the theme file that you just uploaded and click “extract”. The extract link is on the far right in the upper corner. Close the window that pops up.

#10- Open WordPress and go to the dashboard. Click on “Presentation”. You should see your new theme as one of the selections. Click on it. Your theme should now be activated.

Straight away I would get stuck at #1:

I wouldn't know how to download to a folder or where a folder is, I find control panels like a maze, there are multiple things in mine called the same thing, so wouldn't have a clue what I was doing, or how to make a folder for WordPress and then a labelled folder, that's all Dutch to me mate, I just want to go click, done :)

Um...all that means is 'download the theme to your computer'. When it mentions folders in step 1 it's just referring to folders on your computer. It's nothing to do with a control panel, and FTP isn't really a control panel as such, it's just a file organising and transferring system.

Honestly, give it a go mate - it's not as hard as you think. With a typical FTP program it's literally just a case of drag and drop. Same as it would be if you moved a Word doc from your desktop to somewhere else on your computer. Or in Hostgaotr's web FTP case, like uploading a photo to Flickr.
