I was looking at the newgtldstats.com website and saw the newly launched .xyz had 20% market share of new gtlds with 290,000 registered.
I was shocked by this and did some reading. Then I saw that most of them were given away for free to the respective .com owners (only worthless ones like 34309343mskd.xyz etc). The owners actually had to manually opt-out otherewise they were given the free domains automatically.
Basically they've just pumped up .xyz's registration figures so they can call it "the most popular new gtld".
That seems pretty clever to me. I mean whenever a newspaper talks about new gtlds they'll likely reference .xyz as the leader and it will increase their brand awareness. Furthermore, seeing it has so many registrations will give others confidence in its success.
The downside is that giving it away for free can cheapen the brand but still pretty clever!
