I know you probably won't share your strategies, but it's worth asking anyway ;-)

Can anyone give me any pointers for choosing good domain names. Not your trade secrets, but some tidbits of your personal strategy, without giving away any areas completely that you are working on (well, feel free to do that by PM if you wish ;-)

I think that is the key - sort a strategy before buying any domains.

There are far too many 'ok' names out there that are worth the reg fee but may not make enough back to make it worthwhile.

Sort out what you are looking for - style / genre / rarity / resale value / future buyers and you ought to be ok.

The other 'rule' I stick to is that if I do not like the name I wont buy it, even if its cracking, I have to personally like it.

Cheers,
Rob.

Sooty,

Depends what you mean by "good domain", whether its a name you want to buy with the intention of selling it for a profit or if its a domain to buy for parking and making a residual income on Sedo for example.

There are people on here who do not have any hyphenated domains in their portfolios for example, as generally these are not easy to sell on. They are good however for search engine recognition and we have actually found that our top earners on Sedo are hyphen-domains.

We have a balance of both and also develop some of our better names into websites as a parking page does not do much to encourage traffic.

Either way traffic names are what most people look for so use Overture or Wordtracker and see for yourself what the current popular search terms are.

Hope that is of some help to get you started.

Thanks guys!

So, concerning type-in traffic at Sedo, are you saying that many people actually type in the hyphen into the browser address bar?

Hi,
I have read that the intelligence that is now built in to the Google search engine can actually seperate terms and provide the associated page results.

So onlinecasino will be identified as exactly that without the need for a hypen. Don't ditch your hypenated names too soon though because they still work; but with the non hyphenated name you have also got the option of selling alot easier.

Regards )
