ICANN88 Lisbon Community Forum will take place from 13-18 March 2027 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The meeting will be held at the Lisbon Congress Center and hosted by Associação DNS.PT, the organisation responsible for Portugal’s .pt country-code domain.

ICANN88 is part of ICANN’s global Public Meeting series. These meetings bring the global Internet and domain name community together to discuss policy development, DNS coordination, technical operations, internet governance, compliance, security, stability and the future of the domain name system.

A return to Lisbon

ICANN has noted that the last ICANN Public Meeting held in Lisbon was ICANN28 in March 2007. ICANN88 therefore marks a return to Lisbon after 20 years.

For the European domain community, this is a particularly relevant ICANN meeting because it brings the global ICANN community back to a major European internet and digital policy hub.

About ICANN Community Forums

ICANN holds three Public Meetings each calendar year in different regions around the world. The Community Forum format is one of ICANN’s main meeting types and is designed to support cross-community discussion, policy development, outreach, working group progress and direct interaction between the ICANN community, Board and organisation.

Community Forums typically include many different sessions across ICANN’s supporting organisations, advisory committees, stakeholder groups and constituencies.

Why this event matters to the domain industry

ICANN meetings are among the most important global gatherings for the domain name industry.

ICANN88 will be relevant for anyone following domain policy, registry and registrar operations, new gTLDs, DNS abuse, RDAP, registration data policy, Universal Acceptance, IDNs, ICANN compliance, DNS security and the wider governance of the domain name system.

The detailed ICANN88 schedule has not yet been published. However, ICANN Community Forums typically include sessions and discussions around:

  • Registry and registrar policy issues
  • DNS abuse and online trust

  • ICANN contractual compliance
  • Universal Acceptance and Internationalized Domain Names

Why DNForum readers should follow ICANN88

Even for domain investors and brokers who do not attend every ICANN session, ICANN meetings can influence the wider commercial domain market.

Discussions around new gTLDs, abuse mitigation, registration data, RDAP, registry agreements, registrar obligations, Universal Acceptance and DNS policy can all affect how domain names are registered, managed, protected, bought, sold and used.

Venue

The selected venue is the Lisbon Congress Center, a major conference venue in Lisbon.

The city is well connected for European and international visitors, making ICANN88 accessible for registries, registrars, policy professionals and domain industry participants across Europe and beyond.

Current status

The dates, location, venue, host, hybrid format and open access status have been announced. Participation details, registration information, the detailed schedule and session agenda are expected to be published closer to the meeting date on the ICANN meetings website.
