Nominet is hosting a Members’ Regional Event at the National Railway Museum in York on Tuesday 8th September 2026.

This member event brings together the .UK community at one of Britain’s most iconic technology, engineering and transport venues. The day will include time with the Nominet team, including CEO Paul Fletcher, alongside product and technical colleagues, with updates on the next developments for .UK.

For AcornDomains members involved in .co.uk, .uk and the wider UK domain name space, this should be a useful opportunity to hear directly from Nominet, meet other members, and discuss the future direction of .UK in a more relaxed regional setting.

Why the National Railway Museum?

Nominet has chosen the National Railway Museum at a time when several important milestones are being marked across UK technology and infrastructure: the 40th anniversary period of .UK, the 10th anniversary of the National Cyber Security Centre, and Nominet’s own 30th anniversary.

These milestones also coincide with the 200th anniversary of the railways, a British invention that transformed how the country moved, communicated, coordinated information and traded.

The railway helped enable a new scale of industry and innovation, much like the growth of the internet and the digital economy many years later. Railways also became one of the first major industries to deal with data-rich, safety-critical systems spread across a national network, requiring early forms of communication, control systems and operational coordination.

That makes the National Railway Museum a fitting venue for a Nominet member event focused on the future of .UK, internet infrastructure and the next stage of development for the UK namespace.

What’s in store

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the Nominet team, including CEO Paul Fletcher, as well as product and technical colleagues.

Nominet says members will hear more about the next developments for .UK while enjoying lunch, good company and access to the full National Railway Museum galleries.

The event will also include access to the virtual Flying Scotsman simulator.

Museum highlights

The National Railway Museum is one of the UK’s major engineering and transport museums. Nominet highlights several exhibits that members can explore during the day, including:

  • LNER 4468 Mallard - the legendary steam locomotive that set the world speed record for a steam train at 126mph in 1938.
  • The 1960s Shinkansen Bullet Train - an icon of high-speed rail and one of only two Shinkansen vehicles on display outside Japan.
  • The Eurostar Power Car - a reminder of the engineering that connected Britain to mainland Europe through the Channel Tunnel in 1994.
  • Flying Scotsman VR - a virtual reality experience based around one of the world’s most famous steam locomotives.

Why this may interest AcornDomains members

This event is relevant for anyone with a serious interest in .UK domain names, including domain investors, registrars, resellers, developers, brokers, legal professionals and long-standing members of the UK domain community.

Nominet sits at the centre of the .UK namespace, and regional member events like this can provide useful insight into what is happening next with .UK from both product and technical perspectives.

It should also be a good opportunity to meet other Nominet members outside London and continue the wider conversation around .UK, registry modernisation, domain policy, digital infrastructure and the future of the UK internet.
