Why the National Railway Museum?
Nominet has chosen the National Railway Museum at a time when several important milestones are being marked across UK technology and infrastructure: the 40th anniversary period of .UK, the 10th anniversary of the National Cyber Security Centre, and Nominet’s own 30th anniversary.
These milestones also coincide with the 200th anniversary of the railways, a British invention that transformed how the country moved, communicated, coordinated information and traded.
The railway helped enable a new scale of industry and innovation, much like the growth of the internet and the digital economy many years later. Railways also became one of the first major industries to deal with data-rich, safety-critical systems spread across a national network, requiring early forms of communication, control systems and operational coordination.
