I registered 2 domains with 123 reg a couple of days ago (at the same time), but unfortunately, 123 reg decided to register one of them to somebody else completely.

123 reg have invoiced me for both names, and I have paid for them both, and it's obviously a mistake on their part, the question is what do I do now?

I have contacted 123 Reg, who's fantastic customer service department's response was 'You'll have to contact Nominet'.

I presume I now have to go through Nominet's DRS? Is that right, or is there something else I should do?

They are the registrar acting on behalf of Nominet. If they have screwed up it's up to them to contact Nominet on behalf of their client - you!

Passing the buck when it's their responsibility.

Could it be that you both registered it at almost exactly the same time and were both charged? If that's even possible.

If not it's rather sloppy of them. Can you contact the person listed as the owner and get it transfered over? Assuming that they would do so of course. There's additional expense with that of course.

I would think 123 reg should sort this out, as nominet don't really have control over who 123 Reg chose to attribute this to.

If it got regged before you even by a case of just minutes, unless it's your trademark then I would say it's tough luck and a DRS is going to get you nowhere.

123 reg take seconds to recieve your payment but as long as they like regging domains, I have regged 100s with Domain Monster and every single one is regged within seconds.

People tend to leave 123 reg for other registrars.

I'm going to contact the company they have it down as registered to, if indeed they have registered it just before me, then fair play, I'll ask for a refund from 123. But my gut feeling is they haven't, the domain is in a completely different industry than this company is in, so I suspect it's a mistake on 123's behalf.

Make no mistake, I'll be registering my domains elsewhere in the future if it is their fault.

Thanks for the advice.

My only experience with 123 was years ago, it was disappointing.
They failed to register a domain. Paid a few £ for nothing. Obviously their scripts are buggy.

They are (were) also difficult to reach, if I remember well it was some 0700xx number unreachable from outside the UK and no answers to E-mail.
I am surprised they are still so established even among domainers.

When you pay dirt cheap prices you can expect to get some dirt in return :)

Try contacting there representative here webfusion has been helpful for myself and others with 123-reg issues in the past

i have had a recent issue with 123-reg aswell, i reg'd a domain the other day and when it went through the payment process it said there was a problem but they still took the payment and left the domain un-reg'd, when i contacted live support they said I would have to re-do the whole process even though they had taken the payment. I waited a few days then reg'd the domain again and all seemed ok until I went into my control panel and the domain wasn't in it but when i did a who is I did atleast show as the owner and then got support to add it to my control panel.

I'm going to think very seriously about using them on my next domains after this as they still owe me the original reg fee.

Thanks for the help everyone, after a (empty) threat of legal action, it's all been sorted.

It happened the other way round for me, I noticed a domain in my nominet account "Alpha Associates" regged by 123 to me. Very nice of them but I didn't ask for it or pay for it, I contacted them to sort it out but it is still there weeks after the event.

I am at a loss what to do other than let it expire!

So their system must still be a mess.

Years ago, I left registerfly when I started seeing the gaping holes in their systems. And I was right not to wait for the meltdown.
Bugs= security problems.

Hello,

My name is Nerys and I work for 123-Reg.

I am sorry to hear that you have had difficulty with your domain name registration. I have seen that you have stated that this issue is now resolved, however if there is still anything you would like to have looked into please provide me with a domain name, username or support ticket ID number and I can look into this issue for you. If you PM me the details I will be glad to help with any outstanding issues.

Regards,

Nerys
