Ive got a 51" active 3D Samsung, i cant remember the model, it was around £750-800 about 3 years ago then i had to buy 4 pairs of glasses then a 3D Blu-ray player but its only been used a handful of times at the most.
The picture quality from Samsung is great though, well worth taking a look at

Has to be lg passive for me. Our kids love 3d and the viewing angles from the lg are brilliant. Couldn't imagine sitting there with glasses heavier than cinema ones, would be a nightmare.
Lgs are feature rich and affordable, and passive is flawless.
Did see a Sony 51 inch at a bargain price in pcworld a few weeks back that would have made me switch if I wasn't penniless though lol
I agree with boxerdog in Samsung screens though. I put a finlux 3d tv in the kids room and they use Samsung screens. The spec said it didn't have 2d to 3d or up scaling and it has both. Think the description writer made a few mistakes on their web site.

I got a 3d about 3 years ago its an active one and remembering to charge glasses is a pain so I rarely use the feature.
It works well with sport and animated films but for most stuff there's not much much difference.
I have been toying with the idea of the upgrade since just before Christmas at that point I think the LG's were best sets at the price point things may have changed a little with last years models being reduced I'm not sure.

LG 47LB650V 47 Inch Smart 3D TV + LG BP645 Smart 3D Blu-Ray Player its £849 at costco same price as elsewhere I think but with player thrown in.
I was tempted to go with active 3d but with 5 of us watching one of the kids is bound to complain their batteries have run out or their heads heavy with the glasses or the dogs sat on a pair etc.
Also after watching the new Spiderman 3d film last week Ive got plenty of passive gigs lying around.

Active was certainly thought to be the better implementation of 3d I haven't tried passive in the home but the next TV I get will probably be passive as I don't use the technology enough to get all the extra expensive glasses needed if you have people round and you want to watch the match in 3d
I agree about the size if your upgrading don't you want to go bigger

Ive currently got a 2005 samsung 42inch plasma (cost £1700!). I just read an archived review of it and is shows how tv's have advanced.
The review raves about the 1 hdmi and its 30kg weight! Most now are around 14kg ish.
I'll def go bigger with a 47 or 50inch its just between LG or Samsung.
Its easier choosing a new car!! Dual core, Quad core etc

The 50 inch model seems to have been discontinued in the UK
only place I seen it was but it costs as much as the 55 inch version with the catalogue price markup

I wonder if you can hold out another 9-12 months, whether you couldn't then pick up a decent 4K TV for around the budget you're currently talking about spending? One model I looked at has already come down from nearly £3K to £2.3K since November. Given that you got 9 years use out of your current TV, you probably don't want to be looking back in a year or so and feeling that you missed the boat...

Don't forget you need to be a minimum of 2 and a half times the tv size away from the tv to see 3d properly. And best on a stand and not wall.

I thought about that but I live in the sticks and dont have fast broadband to take advantage of Netflix's 4k streams etc. Also not much content about yet but it was worth mentioning. Cheers

Its a uk based company already sold out everywhere and now very hard to find, i been keeping an eye out on ebay and ive just this min won one at £81 brand new from a seller who claims it will be with him in 2 days hes one of the first to have one.
What do you think???
and i might wait as edwin says and see if any decent sales come in and get a 4k tv end of this year....

That kettle is ridiculous, companies these days are supposedly trying to be more eco friendly with their innovation, so they bring out a kettle that you boil before you get home which wastes electricity, because then you have to boil it again when you get in, but wait. You could boil it just before you get to your house, in which case, why not wait until you get in your door and save a phone call as well
